(34,845 posts)If Romney continues to bring the GOP's brand name down, he will drop out. He will also get stressed out with the media pile-on, which has only just started.
DrDan
(20,411 posts)Gingrich has been bring down the GOP brand name for years . . . and guess who is still around.
Same for Larry Craig, David Vitter, and others who have committed transgressions that are/were tolerated by the GOP.
Nope - no way he is dropping.

(34,845 posts)The difference now is that we are too close to the convention. Many in the GOP have already abandoned Romney. If things get much worse, and Romney can't take the pressure any longer, he may drop.
Of course it's all speculation.
DrDan
(20,411 posts)don't think that is the same as abandoning him.
I agree - all conjecture at this point. All kinds of twists will develop over the next few months.

The nominee is Romney.

(13,992 posts)It could be pure political poison -- I'm betting that he didn't pay any taxes in one ore more of those years -- and he'll either release the return an get hit by a shitstorm of biblical proportions or not release them and have the campaign become all about his secrecy.
Screwed. Either. Way.
So he might just say, "Fuck it. I'm a millionaire and I don't need this crap" and drop out.

(13,992 posts)Americans don't mind a guy being rich. Heck, we Democrats have John Kerry and the Kennedy's and most of us sort of like Warren Buffet and even Bill Gates.
But we don't like a rich prick who thinks he's better than the rest of us. Romney not releasing his taxes, or releasing them to show that he didn't pay anything, that's going to be an open sore that the Democrats will pick up constantly.

(96,793 posts)This idea just seems sillier all the time.
He's an arrogant republican who thinks he knows what's best for the rest of us.
He's NOT dropping out.

(31,464 posts)Romney will not back out. That would be failure. He cannot "fail" at something unless he makes a few million dollars off it, and the FEC doesn't allow you to keep campaign contributions for personal wealth. Therefore, he'd rather lose to Obama and write off his expenses onto the taxpayer.
Cognitive_Resonance
(1,546 posts)no longer viable and a risk for causing severe losses down ticket. Mitt does not have a power base within the Republican Party. The Establishment is driven only by expediency and narrow self interest. The rubes of the base never supported him, and would be happy to see him go. If it comes out before the convention that Mitt was caught in the amnesty program for his UBS account then I think he's cooked. How could the GOP nominate a crook? The Establishment would have to force him out, and try to nominate a safe replacement such as Pawlenty or Portman.

(1,055 posts)There is no possible way to build a national campaign in 68 days, so NOBODY of any consequence would accept being the sacrificial lamb.

(5,179 posts)I suspect the GOP would rather throw this election with their crap candidate then have it look like their party has fallen apart.

(20,317 posts)Romney is not dropping out. He's locked up the nomination with no real support from the broader Republican base, because their 1%er wing trumps the chumps, so to speak.
Their big money players want Romney, and that's what they'll get. The hayseeds and religious nuts and ammosexuals will just have to suck it up. Their Lords have chosen.
