Jimmy Carter offers to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un

Former US President Jimmy Carter has offered to meet with Kim Jong Un in a last-ditch attempt to prevent another Korean war.

A University of Georgia professor detailed Carter’s offer to Korea JoongAng Daily, a South Korean newspaper.

“Carter wants to meet with the North Korean leader and play a constructive role for peace on the Korean Peninsula as he did in 1994,” Park Han-shik told the newspaper.

Park, who met with Carter, is the professor emeritus at the university’s School of Public & International Affairs.

“Should former President Carter be able to visit North Korea, he would like to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and discuss a peace treaty between the United States and the North and a complete denuclearization of North Korea,” Park told the paper.

Park said Carter wants “to prevent a second Korean War.”

Hopefully, it's not too late; also we can only hope that the current occupant of the White House doesn't sabotage Mr. Carter out of pure pique.

1. Another reason to admire Jimmy Carter (and Rosalynn, they are a team)

Here's a former president, aged 93 and melanoma cancer-survivor, who is offering his bona fide and time-honed skills to help solve a vital world problem, without ego and without attacking Trump (not that he doesn't deserve every kind of criticism). I hope Trump taps this venerable soldier for peace, though I doubt that he will.

2. Trump will NEVER approve this meeting. And Carter cannot negotiate as a private citizen (See:

Mueller, Robert).

7. It's too late...

Carter’s recent comments on North Korea have angered the White House, which last month reportedly asked him not to speak publicly about the crisis amid fears he was undermining Trump, who refuses to entertain any form of rapprochement with the regime.

Media reports said a senior US state department official had visited Carter at his home to pass on Trump’s request.

8. That is almost funny. How do they expect to intimidate Carter?

Are they gonna threaten his future political prowess? Primary him? Take away his income-producing property? Say bad things to his Sunday School class?

9. Of course he did, he's dedicated to keeping the peace

And he successfully negotiated with Kim Jong Un's grandfather in 1994 on behalf of the Clinton administration. With his background in nuclear engineering and his knack for diplomacy, he's perfect for the job, but of course that makes him unacceptable to Trump.
