Former NFL Coach Mike Ditka On Anthem Protests: There’s Been ‘No Oppression In The Last 100 Years’
By Andrew Bradford on October 10, 2017

Former Chicago Bears head coach and player Mike Ditka simply cannot understand why some NFL players feel a need to kneel during the national anthem as a way to bring attention to discrimination against African-Americans. After all, Ditka maintains, there hasn’t been any oppression in the United States for the past 100 years.

No oppression in the last 100 years? Really, Mike? How about these facts that you conveniently overlooked:

In the South, an estimated two or three blacks were lynched each week in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In Mississippi alone, 500 blacks were lynched from the 1800s to 1955. Nationwide, the figure climbed to nearly 5,000.

Until 1965, blacks could not vote in most Southern states.

There was once a time in this country when African-Americans were forced to use separate bathroom facilities, go to woefully inadequate public schools, and ride at the back of buses.

No oppression of rich white folks like himself in the last 100 years is what he meant to say.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Ditka issued a statement Tuesday night clarifying comments he made in regard to NFL players choosing to kneel during the playing of the national anthem.

"The characterization of the statement that I made does not reflect the context of the question that I was answering and certainly does not reflect my views throughout my lifetime," the former coach of the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints said in a statement. "I have absolutely seen oppression in society in the last 100 years and I am completely intolerant of any discrimination. The interview was about the NFL and the related issues. That's where my head was at. I was quoted in the interview stating, 'You have to be colorblind.' I stated that you should look at a person for what they are and not the color of their skin. I'm sorry if anyone was offended."

He thinks that because he interacted with elite diverse athletes, he knows something about diversity. All he actually knows is that multimillionaires don't face much oppression when traveling with the team...
