Former Vice President Joe Biden portrayed his friend and Democratic Senate candidate Doug Jones as having the honor and character that Alabama and the country needs as he campaigned for Jones on Tuesday in Birmingham.
"The definition of character ... character is a little more than the lengthened shadow of a man. This man has cast in his young years a very significant shadow," Biden told a crowd of 1,100 at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex's East Ballroom. "Doug has demonstrated his courage and his absolute integrity. Doug and I have been friends for a long, long time. Doug knows Alabama. He knows your heart, and he'll never let you down."
Jones, a former federal prosecutor best known for convicting two Klansmen behind the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing, has made integrity a key theme in his campaign against former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, his Republican opponent in the Dec. 12 special election who was removed from the bench twice for defying orders on the Ten Commandments statue and gay marriage.
"I want to make sure that when I'm elected, I carry out my term," Jones told the crowd in a not-so-subtle dig against Moore. "And you do that - it's very simple -- you do that by following your oath of office."

"When government doesn't function at all, who benefits? The wealthy, the very rich - powerful interests," Biden said. "Guys, that's not Alabama."
