Why are we all so depressed? Because each day we realize that life as we knew it is now the opposite

A president elected through a trusted process - nope (stolen/collusion)
A president we can respect - nope (ha!)
A president with a level of sophistication and intellect and curiosity - nope (ha ha!)
A president with empathy and decency - nope (ha ha ha ha ha!)
A presidency that doesn't treat the office like a personal ATM machine - nope (it is probably worse than we know)
A country that is at least making some progress on challenging social issues - nope (we are going backwards)
A media that objectively tells us actual truth, rather than owned and fawning - nope (it's been "nope" for a long time, sadly, with a few notable exceptions)
A public that has high expectations from the president (not when the solid 30-40% are so pleased with this mess - nope)
Communism/Russia/Hatred/Nazis bad - nope (this is simply mind blowing)
A president that comforts rather than put themselves at the center of it all (ha ha ha ha ha ha ha)
Politicians care for the world, environment, its consistuents - nope (not the republicans - party before people)

Anyone want to add on to the list?

I suspect we were all raised to be truthful, kind, accepting, and to try to make the world a better place.

What we are witnessing is a time when we are bombarded daily, multiple times, with examples of just the opposite behavior - and it gets rewarded.

I - am sure, we - want this all to end. It simply isn't clear that there is a political will or ability to do anything except watch it all crumble.

That's what makes this situation seem so intractable. Even if we did come up with a great candidate, most people would be too stupid to recognize that voting for him or her would be in their best interest. I don't have a lot of faith in the average voter anymore.

Living my life as best I can and trying to make a difference. If I do not, well that's the way things go.

severely tested right now.

Part of it probably is due to how trump and his ilk remind me of school bullies - brings back a pretty unhappy phase of my life.

A president who is not demonstrably mentally ill with multiple untreated pathologies

And he represents me in dealing with other members of the world community. But most of all because he is the polar opposite of the real president he took the office from eight months ago.
