A poster from another site who is living in Puerto Rico

has posted this on Reddit:

Poster Dante_wahla

Im posting this from the one area of the island that's still receiving lte.
I haven't had electricity for 2 weeks now. All of the medical schools are closed until further notice. , that should sound absolutely fucked to anyone reading this.
I know many mainlanders think we all live in mudhuts and shit, but don't be fooled, there is a lot to be saved in this island. We're not New York, or even Michigan, but we're just as economically vibrant as any Southeastern state. Doctors, scientists, lawyers, businessmen, all of us have been sitting on our collective asses for days. The loss of productivity might be the catalyst for a complete collapse.
Puerto Rico's infrastructure was in dire straits before the hurricane, but Maria just fucking killed it. Condado, Santurce, Old San Juan, and to say nothing of the rest of the island...power lines and traffic lights are ALL blown to bits, food rationing, gas rationing, no electricity for what will be at least a month. And these are the industrial crenters and wealthy areas.
Everything is dead including the fucking trees that are blocking my street. Everything...except for the corner boys. Goddamn, hats off to them, those guys have been on their grind selling drugs through the entirety of Irma and Maria. The boredom is literally killing us, there is nothing to do except read and get high.
Anyways, we were evenly split on statehood, but 3.5 million Americans got skull fucked and if the Feds continue with their tepid response, the resentment will only grow. More and more I'm coming around to the fact that what I love about America was either a facade or died with FDR and Truman.
I'm American as can be but if we're going to be living like cavemen, I.d like the US to kindly get the fuck out so we can improve relations with our south American neighbors because American citizenship has turned into a fucking farce.

Half of them are probably wondering what and where "Portericko" is.

Congressmen and women from "libbrul" states not only tend to know where it is, but can spell it correctly as well.

6. Information from PR, even if written by a weak spirit. Did what was loved about

America really die for this person or was it never really there, just a facade for him/her also? I suspect the latter since this person does not know what the Democrats stand for and trashes us right along with the Trumpsters. All the same? Really?

Perhaps this just is not the time for this person to self blame? Or perhaps there'll never be a better time than now.

Because I strongly doubt that this person who does not self identify, differentiate, or passionately wish that Obama was still in office got his or her ass to the polls to vote Democrat in 2016.

It might be nice if everyone who did not vote Democrat had to be in Puerto Rico right now, but who'd explain the lesson that should be burning into their brains to them?

14. Well, I started off buying the notion of merely been easily and quickly

swayed from one viewpoint to an extremely different one.

Thinking about it, though, Democrats know there are huge, incredibly huge differences between us and trumpsters and between Obama's Democratic and the current Republican administrations. Does anyone doubt that if Obama were in office all pertinent instruments of government would be turned to rescuing these Americans? That if he went anywhere it'd be to PR and the USVI, not a rally in Alabama?

But this person pretends we're no different, as conservatives tend to do when trying to cover their actions or lack of them, certainly doing whatever is required to believe liberal governance is no better than conservative. So perhaps not a weak spirit but merely a leaning conservative one in whom adversity is having its usual conservatizing effect.

15. I see your point. However, I view his post as

being written by a stressed person who was trying to get a point across about the current administration.

Had more thought been put into his writing, it probably would have been worded differently.

I can't make the leap that he was talking about the Democratic Party. Perhaps he was, I cannot get into his mind.

16. :) I see it but don't buy it. He/she had time, just as I did, to develop thoughts while writing.

And WE never mistake ourselves for Republicans. That's for those who are not Democrats. The stress is real, of course, and anger is understandable.

Misdirected anger is dangerous and usually results in at best contemptible actions, though. It is what elected Rump and empowered the ultraright, and it's not hard at all to recognize it in this post.

17. Well, as you may know...

when you are living through a disaster, you are lucky if you can remember how to tie your shoes after a few days of no sleep and getting disoriented because your town looks like a landscape on mars. So I will forgive something that may be ambiguous. My point in posting the OP was to hear first hand about the conditions from someone who is there.

I was objecting to your posting this for us to read. Or even to the poster's anger at not enough response so far. Fear does that, and fear is obviously fully justified.

31. this country is FULL of people who don't know what the Democrats stand for

and thanks to our weak-ass media presence, i can totally understand why. getting down on someone because someone who lives in an island territory doesn't know the positions and nuances of modern Democratic policy since FDR? really?

to the extent non-Democrats (and even some who register as Democrats) know, seems to me like many have their views defined by GOP agitprop. Democrats are for "big government and high taxes" and that's about as deep as it goes. it's a goddam miracle we win ANY elections anywhere.

if the Democrats don't step it up with getting our message out, the Republicans won't even have to steal election wins anymore. this whole country could turn into Idaho and we'll have no one but ourselves and lackluster media presence to blame.

13. I suspect Trump would love for Puerto Rico to go

He sees a foreign group of people, lots of debt, no return on investment. I suspect maybe his tepid response to PR is his way of ridding the US of something he doesn't like.

it is the kind that plugs into a cigarette lighter type of connection (12 volt). Have not really had to use it yet though.

27. It doesn't matter

Who is POTUS, their power grid
is going to take a long time to repair.

I've seen pics of power lines that are going
to take heavy duty lift choppers to replace.

It isn't going to back to normal for a long
time.

On the long term bright side, they should be
able to do the repairs so this doesn't happen
again.

29. The United States has spent a lot of money

on military equipment. choppers included.

Obama would have deployed them as soon as it was safe to do so.

Every minute wasted is a life lost.

Assets are being conserved for war.

33. Two things:

1) Time. The clock started over 2 weeks ago. That's 2 weeks lost already. Obama would not have let this happen.

2) Time and material. We have it. Why isn't it there already? Why wasn't it there last week?
