Hello helpful DU members!
Hubby and I need to reside our house and we have 2 options - redwood or Royal Products Celect siding. The cost difference is considerable - about $15,000 (the PVC costs less).
We currently have a cedar sided house but it needs to be stained and (long story) resided. My husband, 63, is still willing to go on a ladder to stain it and replace siding but I'm not willing to have him do it. We'd like something to be as maintenance free as possible although standard cleaning will be applied.
That said - anyone have any opinions - one way or another? The Royal Products is warrantied for 25 years against fading, chipping, etc. The builder that wants us to put up the redwood said "he's got a guy that can do it right and it won't have to be stained for 25 years." I know, if the business goes warranties mean nothing so it's a toss-up. In the case of the redwood, the guy putting it in is a perfectionist and not just a fly by night operation (almost 40 years in the business, taken over from his Father). Google searching doesn't help
Keep in mind this is NOT James Hardy (or similar) siding. One more thing - we're in the Chicagoland area but in a shaded (not shady) area that does get lots of snow drifts.
Really need (and appreciate) your help

(836 posts)I put quality PVC on my place 15 years ago. Still looks great. Maintenance free and lasts decades. Snow, ice, hail, sun hasn't fazed it. I'm pushing 60 and hopefully it won't have to be touched until long after I'm gone.
Helpful Hint:
Be sure to save a few pieces of siding for the inevitable mower-thrown projectiles and ensuing holes. Easy to replace.

(20,544 posts)about their experiences.
Neighbor had vinyl put up and they are now dealing with rot underneath the siding. Maybe it was installed incorrectly, I don't know.
A house with vinyl siding burned down and the neighbors ended up with dioxin in their yards. It was measured as part of an industrial cleanup nearby. The finding was that it did not come from industry but it was found in surrounding yards of the burned house.
I also have cedar siding. Back when most stain was oil based, mine lasted 25 years. I started painting with the latex acrylic stain this year and it is a different thing altogether. It goes on more like paint. It does not sink into the wood like the oil based does. I hear Sikkens is the best now - oil based, but expensive.
I would ask people in your community what they have and how they like it.

(291 posts)I would definitely go with the PVC siding. I recommend a light color for your home to help reflect the sun and reduce energy usage for the warmer months in Chicago. The PVC will hold up and require very little maintenance. The savings can be used on other things!
