Poll: Americans think Obama tax plan more fair, would help economy

Poll finds support for Obama’s tax position

It’s a long way from becoming policy, but President Obama’s proposal to raise taxes on households making at least $250,000 a year seems to be a winning political position for now, at least.

A new survey by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found that 44 percent said the tax increase would help the economy, 22 percent said it would be harmful, and 24 percent said the tax hike would not make a difference.

An identical percentage, 44 percent, said a tax hike on better-off Americans would make the tax system fairer, while 21 percent said it would make the system less fair.

In another thread regarding this poll ...

Reading poll results like this, I get a distinct "ObamaCarey" feeling.

The majority correctly identify the issues and support the underlying policy points, at an increasing rate; yet, the "election is still tightening, at an increasing rate."

I took Masters-level stats, a couple research methods classes, and a class on polling ... I can only come to one conclusion ... False reporting regarding the election.

But since I first posted this, I've come to an alternate conclusion ... For a plurality of Americans, race still matters, even to the point of making decisions that certainly will lead to one's own demise.

All it took was being laid off for about 6 years during the 1980's to confirm to me what I had suspected all along. I was "those other people."

I think a lot of people my age are just figuring this out for themselves now.

Hope it isn't too late for them.

In undergrad (Poli Sci/Econ major back in 1983), I wrote a paper about the Reagan Campaign entitled "Those People."

The argument in the paper was that the Reagan campaign told every audience that he was going to get "those people" ... When he started his campaign in Mississippi, "those people" were clearly Black folks; when he was talking to business groups, "those people" was the unions; when he was talking to the unions, "those people" was the anti-union job-shippers; when he was taking to the wealthy, "those people" were the poor; and when he was talking to the middle/working class, "those people" were the "welfare queens."

And sure enough, many of his supporters ... particularly, the Reagan Democrats, discovered that they were "those people."

{This was back in the pre-thumb drive days, so I lost the paper decades ago.}
