Gillibrand to back Sanders's single-payer bill: report

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) will join a growing list of Democratic cosponsors of Sen. Bernie Sanders's (I-Vt.) "Medicare-for-all" proposal, according to a Friday report from Mic.
Gillibrand joins other possible 2020 Democratic White House hopefuls in supporting the bill, including Sens. Cory Booker (N.J.), Kamala Harris (Calif.), and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.).
Sanders will unveil the measure at an event on Wednesday. The bill is quickly gaining Democratic support, and the issue of single payer is emerging as a key test for possible presidential contenders.
Gillibrand expressed some support for single-payer health care in June as well.
"Health care should be a right, it should never be a privilege. We should have Medicare for all in this country," she said, according to CNN.
Gillibrand's office did not respond to a request for comment on the Mic report.

(205,031 posts)And this is a traditionally Republican district, but she was very popular here. I was there when she first launched her campaign in 2006, amazingly defeated a Republican who had held that office for years. Of course, it didn't hurt that she had President Clinton by her side - the event was SRO here in my little burg!
I'm wondering if this is her time, she still has two young kids at home, but whenever she decides to run for higher office, I have no doubt that she'll get a lot of support from here...

(59,500 posts)would have when the bill is introduced this week. Bernie had a birthday party on the Ethan Allen boat that leaves from Burlington for a loop around Lake Champlain. He spoke briefly - sounding very positive on it not being a one man show. It was a great time, nice dinner, perfect weather, and a gorgeous sunset.
The support from many of the young leaders of the Democratic party on this is great -- even if it has no chance this Congress. It is impressive that so many are willing to publicly sign on. It bodes well for when we returnto power.
