Trump’s Congressional Allies Are Trying to Manipulate the Steele Dossier to Undercut the Russia Investigation

Rep. Devin Nunes’ renewed role is troubling, Democratic lawmakers tell Mother Jones.

DAN FRIEDMANSEP. 8, 2017 2:43 PM

As the Trump-Russia scandal expands, Republicans responsible for leading investigations into the matter have consistently pursued angles that critics say are designed to undermine the investigation and distract attention from the main issue: Russia’s covert interference in the 2016 election and interactions between the Trump campaign and Vladimir Putin’s regime.

Last week, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) joined in a key component of that GOP effort: attempts to deflect attention by focusing on what’s known as the Steele dossier. These are the memos written during the campaign by a veteran British intelligence official that included allegations that the Kremlin had sought to cultivate and co-opt Trump, in part by collecting compromising information on him, and that his campaign secretly exchanged information with Moscow.

Nunes, who was forced to step aside from the Trump-Russia probe in March, returned to the fray by subpoenaing the Justice Department and FBI to demand information on the FBI’s interactions with Steele, who began sharing his memos with the bureau in the summer of 2016. The subpoenas seek material on whether the FBI paid Steele or used his information to apply for secret warrants (presumably to eavesdrop on Trump-related targets).

Democrats say the request appears to be the latest example of committee Republicans attempting to furnish the White House with talking points to diminish the Russia scandal. “They seem to want to do the president’s bidding and parrot the president’s misguided beliefs,” says Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), a member of the Intelligence Committee.

That might have an effect on public opinion, but it won't bother Mueller's team in the least. Nitram Sep 2017 #5

Paul Ryan is scared to death that his name is about to pop. Otherwise, why would he allow Nues to keep his secret Chairmanship. Steele did mention Monies going to Ryan and McConnell.

Get ready for that too. Some right-wingers will try to defuse this whole thing by putting out a pee-tape that makes Trump look "okay" and not complicit. Don't be fooled!

Supposedly the FBI already has the real pee-tape but it's not being released to the press. (It's evidence.) So anything we can see on the internet isn't real. Probably Steve Bannon and Karl Rove are working on the fake one right now.

They are focused, disciplined, and diligently building an unassailable case against Trump and anybody else who was involved in his dirty dealings with Russia.

Is trying to derail the investigation, he was caught running to the WH in the middle of the night handing over info from the incidental capture of 45's buddies talking to Russian stooges during the campaign.

Of course they're trying to discredit the Steele document, they've been caught red handed (yuk yuk) colluding with our nations enemies and are trying to deflect away from the fact.

They are going to jail, they know it, they're going to need an ass bandage in a size they don't make, as they've found that lying through their teeth doesn't work on people who have an IQ higher than the people who voted for them it's a last resort.

Can you feel the desperation?, I can smell fear all the way over here in Washington state, but it's WAAAY too late and speaks volumes to just how far they will go to keep out of jail, if someone such as Nunez as far down in the alleged conspiracy as he is goes to this level right out in public for all the world to see then you know meetings have been held, calls have been made, threats have been stated in no uncertain terms.

If the big guys go down they're taking you with them and the blame will be put on you.

It couldn't happen to a shittier bunch traitors, it's going to be so fun to watch them all go down in flames.

I can't wait.
