#Retroactively tops the Twitter trends list for sixteen hours

Haha! Good times!

Did Romney leave Bain Capital in 2002 or 1999? On Sunday Romney's spokesman Ed Gillespie explained the alleged discrepancy: "He took a leave of absence and, in fact, ended up not going back at all and retired retroactively to February 1999 as a result."

The Twittersphere took Gillespie's comment and ran with it, keeping #retroactively at the top of US Twitter trends for sixteen hours after the hashtag was launched by David Waldman, editor at liberal site The Daily Kos (aka The Great Orange Satan, as conservatives fondly call it). Here are some of the most-retweeted #retroactive tweets:

Matt Yglesias: Michael Jordan retiring #retroactively, denies responsibility for those two seasons on the Wizards. (@mattyglesias, Slate).

David Waldman: Zimmerman stayed in the car. #Retroactively. (@kagrox, Daily Kos).

Sahil Kapur: I've decided to #retroactively do a lot of things differently in high school. (@sahilkapur, Talking Points Memo).
