If you're not in the hurricane zone, and you've got DIY projects planned... get your materials.

Drywall is going to get expensive. Wire will probably go up and may be scarce because copper's getting harder to mine and we're using more than ever before, so even with recycling, we're pushing peak copper. Lumber is already rising because Lord Dampnuts wanted to pick a fight with Trudeau over lumber and chicken? Tomatoes? Something like that. Same for roofing, tile. Expect prices and supply to start rising shortly after the water is down enough to start demolition.

Katrina took out a metro of about 2 million and another 1.5 million in two states. About half of Katrina destroyed structures were not rebuilt. This is twice that, in one metro area. It's not just double the size, the material requirements are going to be somewhere between a multiple and an exponential.

If you buy now, from stocks on hand, it's not going to short the supply diverting south. The Despot, Big Blue and Big Grrreen will not pull what's on the shelves to redirect, but restock may get iffy. Storage may be cheaper if you're not ready for the project right now. Recycle when possible. Check your local Habitat for Humanity store or architectural reuse. Or put the project off for at least a year.

2. The resources on your shelves *now* are not going to go to TX anyway.

It's what's going to be available in 30, 60, 90 or more days.
