Too funny. With news breaking an hour ago that Mitt Romney retired from Bain retroactively (whatever the hell that means), at the hands of Ed Gillespie's hilarious attempt at damage control following yesterday's instaclassic BLOCKBUSTER half-a-million-views-in-a-day slamdunk Obama ad "Firms", the internet isn't wasting any time in responding:
...a kossack wrote a diary on it earlier: Sr. campaign advisor Gillespie says Romney retired retroactively from Bain
...there's @LOLGOP:
It's #retroactively satisfying to see Bush's favorite hacks Ed Gillespie and Karl Rove making everything worse for Mitt.
...an old Twitter account has found new life today, and may possibly go viral: RetroactiveMitt. Many hilarious #retroactive puns to be found over there.
Cant wait until the Romney campaign #retroactively denouce Gillepsie's remarks this morning @Chris_Moody @chrislhayes
Personally, I can't wait for the Romney campaign to demand an apology from @RetroactiveMitt. LOL
...a Yahoo question has already been raised:
...#retroactively is trending on Twitter
<...>
You know it's bad when the business community rips you a new one. From "Everyone Is Already Ripping This Mitt Romney Adviser For Saying Romney 'Retired Retroactively' From Bain Capital" via Business Insider:
"This Political Wire tweet says it all: "Romney campaign comes up with worst talking point ever.""
This is just delicious.

Can we go back far enough to have a re-do on the 2000 and 2004 elections (Kerry would have to retroactively choose someone other than Edwards)?

(29,149 posts)Sure, the ACA draws a lot from the Massachusetts plan, but Romney retroactively resigned as governor once he decided he didn't like the Obama plan.
Of course, if he should somehow win the election this fall, he'll have to retroactively resign during his 2016 re-election campaign.

On the Road
(20,783 posts)Especially since there was a much better way of explaining what happened than saying he resigned retroactively.
Reading between the lines, it sounds like Romney went to run the Olympics without changing his title and functioned like an outside director for several years. Outside directors attend board meetings quarterly or semiannually and aren't really involved in the day to day running of the company. The $100k would have been compensation as a director. After several years, he formally relinquished the title of CEO and president.
I am sure Romney is trying to weasel out of any involvement in Bain's business decisions from 1999 on. But he did it by coming up with an explanation that immediately became the stuff of political jokes.
This is one reason that CEO's are generally the best candidates. They are used to a business environment in which they get the benefit of the doubt rather than a political process where everything they say and do gets put under the microscope and quickly becomes a source of political attacks.
