SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The city of Syracuse has denied a permit requested by ACT for America to hold a rally next month to support President Donald Trump's immigration, refugee and border policies, according to a spokesman for the mayor's office.

ACT for America, which has been labeled an extremist anti-Muslim group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that tracks hate groups, says it will hold "America First" rallies across the country on Sept. 9, including one in Syracuse. Scott Presler, lead activism strategist for ACT for America, told Syracuse.com in June that the group is not anti-Muslim.

Mayor Stephanie Miner spokesman Alexander Marion said the permit was denied due to "health and safety concerns."
