States listed with most hate groups. Where does California rank?

California ranks No. 1 in the nation with 79 active hate groups, six of which operate in Sacramento area, according to a new report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups and extremists in the U.S.

The Southern Poverty Law Center report includes a detailed map of the 917 hate groups actively operating across the United States. Florida ranks second among states, with 63 active hate groups.

In the Sacramento area, the report cited six active hate groups: Golden State Skinheads, a racist skinhead group, the Traditionalist Worker Party, a white nationalist group, the Pacific Justice Institute and Verity Baptist Church, both anti-LGBT groups, and As-Sabiqun and European-American Evangelistic Crusades, general hate groups.

In June 2016, a rally by members of the Traditionalist Worker Party in the shadow of the state Capitol devolved into violence when members clashed with Antifa, or anti-fascist demonstrators. Ten people were injured, with at least five stabbed in the violent confrontation.

William Planer, a member of the Traditionalist Worker Party, was arrested in July in Colorado for his role in the riot and is awaiting a California court appearance.

A Berkeley teacher and activist who was arrested with two others in June 2016 bloody clash between neo-Nazis and anti-fascist counter-demonstrators faced a Sacramento judge Thursday for the first time on assault charges in the case.

1. I can remember when Huntington Beach was a big center

for skinheads. And that's a coastal area.

3. Rick Scott's Florida right on your ass!

The latest map shows Florida had 63 of the nation's 917 hate groups in 2016. That means the third-largest state in the nation had the second most hate groups, behind California's 79.

5. It does have the most people

and is the 3rd largest in area, so it's not that surprising that it has the most of anything. I wonder what the mean/median sizes are?

11. SPLC crunches the numbers in a host of different ways, allowing us much greater context.

SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center) where I copied and pasted the list from) crunches the numbers in a host of different ways, allowing us much greater context.

On the small chance you're unaware of it, I'd suggest it the initial web source for any research (no doubt, you're already aware of it, but I always look for an excuse to advertise them whenever and whenever possible).

On the other hand, the information is so objective and accurate, it often sucks the joy out of me.

8. In my area there are a lot of Nazi skinhead gangs.

They are young men, and quite open about their affiliation, sporting swastika tattoos and other symbols of hate and white power. When I notice them whilst shopping, they travel in loud, confrontational groups, and they are often disruptive and aggressive. They are a scary bunch.

12. Lots of people in CA. 79 groups for how many million

People? It is probably low, per capita, compared to Florida with 64 or whatever.

I'm thankful to the SPLC for keeping their fingers on the pulse of the hate groups. It's a dirty job.

14. Before my wife and I moved from CA to WA state

I wondered, "Hmmm, what about all the "white" supremacists that are supposedly all over the Pacific Northwest?" I checked out the SPLC website, and it turns out that CA has several times as many hate groups as the entire PNW!
