The driver charged with killing a woman at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville was previously accused of beating his mother and threatening her with a knife, according to police records released Monday.

Authorities say 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr. rammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters on Saturday in Charlottesville, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

The records from the Florence Police Department in Kentucky show the man's mother had called police in 2011. Fields' mother, Samantha Bloom, told police he stood behind her wielding a 12-inch knife. Bloom is disabled and uses a wheelchair.

In another incident in 2010, Bloom said that Fields smacked her in the head and locked her in the bathroom after she told him to stop playing video games.

On the video at the link she seems to be sitting on the floor of her garage. That would be an odd place to sit if you need a wheelchair to get around. She also said she moved to Ohio a year ago for work.

That doesn't mean he didn't pull a knife on her. I'm just unsure about the disability part.

10. He's apparantly claimed he has a diagnosis of schizophrenia

And the article cites his mother as telling police he was prescribed psych meds "for his temper".

He also apparently signed up for the Army and was in training for several months. Schizophrenia is a disqualifying medical condition for the armed services, so either he was lying to people about having a diagnosis or he hid that fact to get into basic.

As horrible as what he did was, the man needs a full and thorough psych eval. Schizophrenia is detectable via MRIs and has known genetic markers- it can radically alter the shape and function of the brain.

He's still a horrible, racist, violent person.... but he might be legitimately mentally ill. :/
