Not Alt-right.
Not White Nationalists.
They don't need a new name - THEY ARE NAZIS.
The some evil scum the entire world came together to defeat 70 years ago.. my dad and uncles included.
These alternate names they go by now doesn't change the fact of who they really are and I want to scream in everyone's face who even suggests a different name than NAZI.
Every instance of those softer terms needs a call out when you see it on Facebook, Twitter - wherever. They are not victims - they are the faces for true evil.
Call them out for what they are. Thankfully DU seems to get this but I'm seeing way too much of this on facebook, etc..

The reality is that all those who died in WWII fighting Hitler, died for nothing.

(81,212 posts)It has the added advantage of being TRUE.
If the name fits, let them WEAR IT. Just like they proudly wear their helmets, jackboots, and swastika arm bands. If it looks like a Nazi, dresses like a Nazi, talks like a Nazi, acts like a Nazi, and quacks like a Nazi, then what the hell else is it, then? Sure as hell ain't no duck.

What happened?

So, Trump's and his Nazi friends' "behavior"'on Twitter is fine, but I can't call a Nazi a Nazi? WTF, Twitter?

(53 posts)Thé nazi's were quite thé men, 70 years ago. They took europe by surprise and with á deadly efficiency. I still hear thé stories, my grandfather told me, how 120000 German soldiers paraded into Brussels in rows of twelve. And their boots only sounded as one. Your scumbags are not one percent of that. And please do not think i have any sympathy with any of those bastards. Me myself is á retiered ranger, and my family fought thé germans twice with high honors.

(13,390 posts)You wind up with some may be NAZIs but at least most of them are just white supremacists. White nationalism is about race and religion. There should be no opportunity to distinguish between them.

(1,214 posts)They give the Nazi salute.
They use Nazi iconography.
They openly admire Nazi "heroes."
They spew Nazi hatred.
They violently attack minorities.
So!
They can call themselves whatever they like.
They are still Nazis.

(10,749 posts)Some spoke out against yesterday's actions. But words are meaningless without action to back them up. By way of example, trumps words are meaningless because they are backed up by just about the opposite action.
So, Republicans, it's time to purge not only voter rolls but your own membership rolls. Purge your party of Legislators, federal, state, and local, who have backed the Nazi movement in America. Force them to support American ideals or the ideals of the most genocidal movement in world history. This is not an "everyone does it" issue. This is an existential movement for the Republican Party and for America overall. Trump has purged the White House of all vestiges of mainstream republicanism. It's long past time for you to disassociate yourself from the tacit leader of the Nazi movement in the United States. As others have observed, if you don't, you own it.

(3,280 posts)It is time to strike "alt-right" from our vocabulary.
But I disagree on "White Nationalist." I think that's a dirty dirty word too, and I don't mind sticking it to those disgusting ideologues.
My thoughts here: https://www.democraticunderground.com/10029449122
Don't let them disguise themselves behind a buzz word as banal as "alt-right." Richard Spencer and the Brietbart set can own their movement with all of their ideologies spelled out. Breitbart isn't alt-right, it's white nationalist, white supremacist, racist, and neo-nazi.

(6,039 posts)<excerpt>
Paul Gottfried is the first person to use the term "alternative right", when referring specifically to developments within American right-wing politics, in 2008.[5] The term has since gained wide currency with the rise of the so-called "alt-right". White supremacist[6] Richard Spencer coined the term in 2010 in reference to a movement centered on white nationalism, and has been accused by some media publications of doing so to excuse overt racism, white supremacism, and neo-Nazism.[1][7] The term drew considerable media attention and controversy during and after the 2016 US presidential election.[8]

(13,390 posts)Separating them out as some are NAZIs allows for - there's a small group in the mix insulting my grandpa who fought in WWII. But, the rest of them just want to preserve their culture. NAZI are present, white supremacists, Christian identity groups are all in it together.

(22,791 posts)to defeat. Now they fight under various flags, including the Confederate battle flag, but they are the same unrepentant scum we thought had been consigned to the trash pile of history. Like the rotting corpses of the undead, they are making another stand in the belief that the nation's president supports their vile cause.

(12,792 posts)it becomes easier for all of them to rally together under a single moniker.
During the Bush years it was one of the worst insults to label the right-wing as Nazis or fascists. Now, with Young Republicans and others rallying together with the rest of the alt-right, these labels become much more empowering. That belief system can spread like a disease, and we saw how it overtook much of the German population prior to WWII.
These days we have the media and the Internet to help remind us what a true democracy is all about, but they can also be deadly tools when used by the wrong people.
