flags there are mixed in with the many Nazi flags and combination flags combining Nazi and US symbols.

Considering that your civil war ended 150 years ago, it seems that in some areas, mainly southern, that news is not common knowledge.

And the heavy presence of Nazi imagery is very troubling. When did anti-Semitic genocide and master race philosophy become a favored philosophy of the American far right?

Edited to add:

Here is the reference

The second picture is of a number of people with various signs and clothing.

One of the signs accuses Jews of being children of Satan. So the Nazi imagery is horribly fitting in light of this sign. Perhaps it is the only such sign, one hopes, but possibly not.

Many, perhaps most of the people there don't even live there. They're congregating in order to march for their disgusting hatred and racism.

I came from Amherst County, about an hour south of C-ville. Amherst still has segregated cemeteries. (So much for death being the Great Equalizer.) Amherst County Administration Building had two sets of bathrooms until 20 years ago (with a strip of tape to cover "Colored" and "White&quot . Amherst County Courthouse is where the Supreme Court case that legalized state-sponsored compulsory sterilization originated. Amherst County is 20 minutes north of Lynchburg, where the Jerry Falwell legend began. (And Jerry used to broadcast some very racist and Un-Christian sermons in the Sixties.)

Charlottesville is not like the rest of Virginia.

Actually there are two Virginias: the largely rural and small town South and Northern VA (DC area), which is liberal. Charlottesville is sort of in the middle but it's a college town that tends liberal.

of the American far right? Probably back in the '30s. There were a fair number of Nazi sympathizers in the US before WWII (Charles Lindbergh was one of the most famous of them). This has been going on for years and years, and there was quite a bit of it in the '60s but it went more or less underground as a result of the civil rights movement. But because of Trump they are now feeling emboldened to crawl out of the woodwork again.

Many will never let go of their obsession with "the South rising again" from defeat.

I remember my first visit to Germany decades ago and being surprised to see older Germans wearing swastikas on their traditional Alpine hats. Clearly they still held some pride for what most would consider a horrific period for Germany... I guess this isn't such an isolated phenomenon among "vanquished" people, though Germany was probably smart to restrict pro-Nazi hate speech to decrease the dissemination to younger generations.

All through the 19th century the white supremacist ideology was honed in the U.S.

Eugenics, phrenology, the concept of a hierarchy of "races" with some being superior over others. Laws against miscegenation - we were the incubator.

Canada also has and had problems in that area. The First Peoples were and are still subject to a certain ideology that sees whiteness as superior.

yardwork: The Nazis learned a lot from Southern Confederates.

Change that to 'neo nazis' & I'd agree. Racism was more than less a prevailing thought in the early 1900's, so hitler didn't need much help from america.

All through the 19th century the white supremacist ideology was honed in the U.S.

Indeed, even Abraham Lincoln felt african americans were substandard to white america. Well, how could they be on a par when they came over in chains to a new land, new culture without even knowing much of the language? Like putting an elementary student in a college geometry course. Of course slaves would be 'substandard' in educational levels, when they were deprived of the ability to even advance much past the basic alphabet.

Eugenics, phrenology, the concept of a hierarchy of "races" with some being superior over others. Laws against miscegenation - we were the incubator.

In the 1920's in washington DC, the ku klux klan marched in parades down constitution & independence avenues to the capitol, and were cheered by throngs of people. The kkk was mainstream america then.
These clowns today don't realize a century has passed.

Is an oasis of progressive values. Look at the signs posted by the closed businesses in downtown Charlottesville.
Here: https://www.democraticunderground.com/10029449452

ALSO Northern Virginia is densely liberal.

We, as a state, are liberal enough to have both our Senators, our Governor, and our AG be DEMOCRATIC. We also went blue for Hillary. So, we are indeed distinct from the other southern states.

The car that rammed the people had Ohio tags. There were racists from many other areas and states at this rally.
