He uses every defense mechanism there is and rationalizes everything away.

Trump's legal team has been in contact with Mueller's office, and Dowd says he has passed along the president's messages expressing “appreciation and greetings’’ to the special counsel.

It's been said that trump is sucking up to Mueller. That's how he's always worked people. If being nasty gets him nowhere, he tries winning them over with praise. I'd bet it's how he worked his mother and father.
