America, Dont Let Donald Trump Fire Robert MuellerIf the opposition waits for Trump to fire the man investigating the Russian collusion scandal, it will be too late. The street protests must start now.
BY JEET HEER July 21, 2017
With President Donald Trump reportedly contemplating radical measures to defend his beleaguered administration from investigation, the United States stands on the brink of a constitutional crisis. According to The New York Times, Trumps staff is trying to dredge up opposition research to discredit special counsel Robert Muellers legal team on the investigation into the Trump campaigns collusion with Russia in last elections election interference.
The Washington Post reports that Trump has inquired as to whether he can pardon associates, family members, and himself. And firing Mueller is a real possibility. As the New Republics Brian Beutler argued last night, theres every indication that the Republican-controlled Congress will give a pass to these abuses of power, edging the American republic closer to authoritarianism.

(146,286 posts)Should Trump attempt to fire Mueller, immediate suits would be brought in federal court seeking an injunction against such action. Every member of Congress and the Senate would have standing to sue, and I have no doubt that the suits would be filed instantly.
It is in no way clear that Trump has any authority to fire Mueller, who is protected in several ways from such a thing.

(28,270 posts)Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't that the method Nixon used in the Saturday night massacre?

(146,286 posts)was it? Trump only has the support of Republicans in Congress because he will sign anything they send him. So would Pence, so an excuse to impeach the great orange-haired poltroon he is might be all they need.

(12,344 posts)A judge reinstated Special Counsel Cox, but by that time, he already had another job, so a new Counsel was appointed and the investigation went on as before. I think if Mueller is fired, he will use that precedent to stay on.
