The Daily 202: Only 1 in 4 Americans strongly support Trump

By James Hohmann July 17 at 7:00 AM

THE BIG IDEA: President Trump is not Teflon, and the conventional wisdom that “nothing matters” is wrong.

A fresh Washington Post/ABC News poll underscores the softness of Trump’s support as he prepares to mark six months in the White House on Thursday.

It also highlights a growing intensity gap. Support for the president is more tepid, but opposition is increasingly inflamed.

The president’s overall approval rating has slipped to 36 percent from 42 percent in April. For context, George W. Bush and Barack Obama both held 59 percent approval ratings in Post/ABC polls conducted around their six-month anniversaries.

Media coverage often focuses on how rank-and-file Republicans, as well as elected officials, continue to stand behind Trump. While true, a close examination of the results suggests that no more than 1 in 4 Americans believe passionately in him or his presidency at this juncture.

Trump’s disapproval rating has risen to 58 percent in the national survey, which was conducted last Monday through Thursday. Overall, 48 percent disapprove strongly of how he’s doing. But while 36 percent approve of Trump overall, only 25 percent approve strongly.

1. One mid term election

And about 5% more downward approval, and we got ourselves an impeachment.

2. What is the point unless you can force Trump to resign or

convict him in the Senate? I don't understand this obsession with impeachment...you have to get removal or it is a waste of time...and politically risky.

3. The point is to remove e him

But you're not going to do it with above 30% approval and a republican majority. It's not an obsession, it's what has to happen. Please show where I was obsessed

4. Because he cheated to get elected

He therefore must be impeached. Regardless of the fact that 67 votes in the Senate to convict is unlikely. At the very least we will be forcing republicans in the Senate to either do the right thing or be on record defending the first president in history to conspire with a foreign government to get elected.

He could lose in 2020,but that would be almost meaningless. Politicians lose elections all the time that is normal. If Trump is not impeached especially when and if Democrats take back the house in 2018 than that might as well be the end of our Democracy. Might as well be sending a message to future politicians that rules don't matter do what ever you have to to gain power nothing will happen to you and no one will even try and do anything about it.
