I am reading some grim news. Republicans are abandoning their party.

Scarborough, George Will, and others. Grim because no small number of them may find their way (however begrudgingly, and likely in a self-serving quest for votes) to our party. I have seen this play before, though not ever in a situation similar to today. Democrats will be more than happy to take them with a "D" behind their names, but at what costs? Granted, we sure need to make gains in huge swaths of America, but I hope we don't further lose our party's soul in the process. Bending to accommodate swing districts is hard enough, how can we ever win the South for example? (Sorry fellow Southerners). I sure don't want a bunch more DINO'S.. I wish we had a hyper-aggressive strategy. Thoughts? (If this belongs in another forum, please give me a chance to move it. Thanks)

1. really ? you see this as Grim News ? the party is whoever the votes in it

George will and Scarborough aren't going to become Democrats. they left the party over trump . they did not stop becoming conservative.

further lose our party's soul ? you act like political parties are religions. did the party have it's soul when it was winning with racist voters before civil rights ?

grim news ? are you look at what trump is fucking doing .

2. I'll tell you what's more grim.

The Republican Party is losing its last remaining shreds of sanity.

4. We used to have a broader based party -- when we held majorities in the House and Senate.

To return to those days would be an achievement, not grim news.

How could we ever win the South? With a "bunch more DINO's," by your standard. But we're far better off with centrist Democrats holding those seats than with tea party Rethugs.

5. yup, the only reason Democrats controlled congress when they did was

because it included more moderate including many much more conservative democrats.

and there is nothing grim about anyone rejecting Trump Vileness.

10. This is the truth. And the alt-left (for want of a better term) since the 70's

has been unhappy with this...and every time we fight on the left and the right we lose...without a big tent that includes moderates, we lose. We live in a center left country. If we are to advance any of our ideas we must win.

6. I really don't have a problem with this

I don't have a problem with honest debate between parties or within the party. Personally, I think they are abandoning their party in hopes of being in position to rebuild it, and I don't mind that either. I am very tired of living in fear of losing our democracy, if people who disagree with me on various issues feel the same way, I am glad. Debating issues is fine, losing the ability to do so terrifies me.

7. None of these people are in Congress

until Republicans in Congress start breaking ranks, it's meaningless.

After Newtown 95% of Americans wanted stronger background checks on guns, but the GOP in Congress resisted.

8. We have a big tent party with different views...there is no purity test in the Democratic

Party. My husband was at one time a Republican...seriously why would you turn down votes.

9. No, they will be heavily into the Independents. Here comes the real Third Party.

That is a little scary.
