Irish Reporter Calls Out Donald Trump for Calling Her 'Beautiful'

The president is criticized after singling out a female Irish reporter while on an Oval Office diplomatic phone call, commenting on her 'nice smile.'

TOM SYKES
06.28.17 6:46 AM ET

President Donald Trump has previously enjoyed perhaps more support—or at least forbearance—in Ireland than in some other countries around the world, thanks in no small part to his significant investments in the cash-strapped country. However his astonishing objectification of a female news reporter employed by Ireland’s state public-service broadcaster has dismayed observers across the board in the Republic.

Trump was making a congratulatory phone call to Ireland’s new Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, on Tuesday, when he beckoned to RTÉ’s Washington correspondent, Caitriona Perry, telling her to “come here” during the call.

Trump was heard saying, “Hello how are you?... Congratulations on your great victory. We have so many people from Ireland in this country. I know so many of them, too. I feel I know all of them. But I just want to congratulate you. That was a great victory that you had.” Trump continued: “We have a lot of your Irish press watching us... they are just now leaving the room."
Trump then singled out Perry, saying, “Where are you from, come here, come here, where are you from?”

-snip-

Other commentators were less generous.

We watched the TV show the first few seasons. She started showing up to be on the panel and my first reaction to my wife was "they finally got the American filter fixed for anime right".

When Donnie Jr. started appearing to offer his expertise that was enough for us. The show had basically run it's course anyway - which showed up in the ratings. It was only a top 10 show for the first year.

I would've been the same way with my own daughter (if I had one).

Great point on how you handled your step daughter. That is exactly how 99% of fathers treat their daughters regarding affection. Donnie needs to be locked away.

by an asshole man in a professional setting who reduces her to her appearance thereby invalidating her professional status understands what this woman felt at that moment. It is not welcomed, it is not kind, it is not a compliment.

But the second thing: he has been at this public image thing for at least two and a half years now. He has been in trouble for this before. The fact that he is still pulling this shit makes it clear that this man is dumber than a box of hammers. He puts his hand on the burner (or the pussy) over and over and over, he gets burned EVERY TIME but he still goes back and does it again.

You can teach an earthworm to avoid painful stimulus, but you can't teach Trump(R) to stop making sexist trouble for himself with public creepiness. He is stupider than an earthworm.

Because he thinks he can do that to anyone, especially women. Beckon and they will come. He expects it. He demands it.

He'll claim he was being nice and flattering and that it's all good.

Making her come over by pointing her out in a crowd, which can force your hand. Trump was smiling the whole time as if that made it right. You don't want to go but there is a crowd, it is a professional setting - even if Trump doesn't grasp that - and he holds an important title - making it all the more uncomfortable and putting the woman in a difficult position - and Trump knows it, too.

Then he throws out a compliment like he's done her a favor. Like a pat on the head.

He did this from a position of power without regard to how it looks, how it feels to the woman, or how it would look to her peers.

Yes, the reporter had a smile plastered across her face but allow me to clue in those who don't know this - women will smile broadly during an embarrassing situation. Not because we're pleased. Look at the smile we give during those times. Really look. That's the smile of a woman who has had to deal with one too many idiots in her life and knows she is damned if she does and she's damned if she doesn't. (Make a scene - because when we fight back against harassment as it is happening, we are viewed as making a scene)

Your work peers can be vicious and we all know it. As a woman, your abilities can be rendered meaningless once some male decides to make you a target of his attention - you're seen in a different light. Not as a competent reporter (or whatever it is you do), but as an object that can now be spoken to and treated in an unprofessional (and abusive and harassing) manner by everyone.

On Trump's actions, in a position of power, directing a woman to do his bidding.

It's not - just - a smile. It's not - just - a request. It's not - just - a compliment.

It's a weapon of control.

As a woman I know the feeling of smiling and wanting to not make a scene so the entire inappropriate mess can be done with least amount of attention by those witnessing an authority figure inappropriately zeroing in on looks rather than maintaining focus on business at hand. Catch 22 for any woman in such a situation - when she asserts herself in defensive she's labeled as reactionary/dramatic and yet when she smiles (which doesn't reach her eyes) and seemingly goes along with it, then she's labeled as "okay with it" and the perpetrator users it to persue. Bet she received from an "official" an invitation for a later "exclusive interview"

when Comey wanted nothing more than to blend in with the drapes.

Exactly the same strategy.

You can see the tape of it here

It's a power move from a narcissist who knows that, with everyone watching, she wouldn't dare kick him in the balls, which is what he deserves.

stressed or fearful in the presence of a threat from a dominant figure. It is more grimace than smile, and it indicates social anxiety in both species, and often even fear of physical assault.

Of course, it was his pervy side who couldn't resist making a move on a blonde in a tight dress.

I guess next he'll actually be groping them. Because he's so rich and powerful that he can get away with it, you know.

What was once a handsome young man on top of the world has become an old, obese, disgusting pervie.

Patterns of behavior are admissible as evidence in court. Trump should know better than to call over a reporter to say that she is beautiful and has a nice smile.

In just the events we have so far mentioned, he is in a position of power, while making women uncomfortable. I'm sure the reporter did not want to be called out in a room full of colleagues so that he could more or less brag on the phone about all the lovely ladies surrounding him, while he then tells her she is beautiful and has a nice smile.

I'll leave it alone. The only real certainty is that Trump is a disgusting idiot regardless of his intentions in that situation.

It's too big a stretch for me.

In case I haven't been clear, I'm not 'carrying water' for Trump -- I just think it's important to be accurate, for the sake of credibility, if nothing else.

I can tell you that even a "perv" isn't a perv every minute of every day. Do I like him? No Do I think his attitudes toward women generally suck? Yes

That still doesn't mean every cursory remark or mild compliment he makes can be concluded as having originated in hell.

A perv is a perv every minute of every day. It's a mind set. What he did to that reporter was a blatant power play so he could show how he can make a woman do his bidding. He did it on tv and he did it on purpose to look powerful. His bill tanked and he needed to pump his ego. He went for the tried and true, demeaning a woman.

I like the way you rationalize his pervy actions as something other than what it was. Very creative, indeed.

It does however, imply the over-70 gentlemen you know are less than civil, and infer their actions as a normalcy.

more than 'perv' behavior

At least that's what I'm reading. It's creepy when he pulls a world leader's arm out of his socket in some bizarre alpha male thingy. It's a dominance issue and obviously more complicated when it involves a female

I don't think he's a 'perv' for noticing attractive women. But it's creepy the way he acts on it

The woman isn't in a position to tell them to fuck off and die slowly- that would be a good way to get fired- and has to awkwardly smile through it, like this woman was doing. Predators KNOW this and enjoy making women uncomfortable with unwanted advances at work and other situations where they are unable to defend themselves.

So here's the deal: if you don't want to be That Guy, don't hit on women who aren't currently free to tell you to get lost. If you see a guy doing so go wedge yourself into the conversation, go ask her a question or otherwise give her a socially acceptable excuse to break loose. If a woman coworker has to tell some creep off BACK HER UP.
