...its pretty hard to be against your own damn bill. The ACA is a GOP construction...but went against it because how dare a black guy get into office and use one of their proposals.

If they came out and said, "were doing single payer and we wanted this, but the Democrats wouldn't even hear us out"...granted it would be bullshit, but they would have scored points given the mentality of some of the electorate. But they courted way too much of libertarian and leaning libertarian wing. They want no plan, hell, they are only a hair shy of being anarchists.
