Leigh Ann Wilson, a Democrat, voted for Trump in hopes he'd curb the opioid crisis. She's not happy

Leigh Ann Wilson, a Democrat, voted for Trump in hopes he'd use health care reform to curb the opioid crisis. She's not happy with the results so far.

http://www.rawstory.com/2017/06/this-mother-voted-for-trump-to-curb-the-opioid-crisis-shes-not-happy-with-how-things-are-going/

Leigh Ann Wilson hoped that President Trump would improve a lot of things in her home state of West Virginia, particularly an issue close to her heart: expanding treatment for people addicted to opioids.

Wilson lost her daughter, 21-year-old Taylor, to an opioid overdose last year. Weeks later, she voted for Trump, won over by his pledge to fight the opioid crisis by building a wall to keep out drugs - and by reforming health care.

She is not impressed with how things are going so far.

And so on Sunday, Wilson spoke at a health care rally in Charleston, W. Va. organized by the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org. The featured speaker: Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. The goal: To press moderate Republican senators to vote against the GOP health bill this week.

Trump is famous for promising to give money but not actually giving any of it. If Trump donates any money at all, it's through his "foundation" - which is more of a money laundering scheme than it is an actual charitable foundation. None of Trump's own money is in his "foundation." Trump likes to have people who owe him money send it to his "foundation"...the idea is, if you "donate" to his "foundation" you can deduct it as a charitable contribution.

The first problem is a donation with a tangible benefit to the donor is not tax deductible. If I set up a charity ball that has a $500 ticket price and includes a dinner with fair market value of $250, you can only deduct $250.

The other problem is this kind of scheme is about as abusive a tax shelter as it's possible to construct.

That stuff ain't coming from Mexico (maybe cocaine, which is often shipped or flown in). Like meth, they are "manufacturing" the street drugs (whether the actual valid pain meds or mixing them with other stuff) right here in America. And the heroin that gets into the mix (whether straight or otherwise combined with something else) generally comes from places like Afghanistan or SE Asia.

I don't think those words mean what you think they mean.

If, when my son died, I had decided to deal with that grief by drinking a couple of bottles of vodka and taken to the streets and killed a small child on a tricycle on the sidewalk, would you want to say that it was okay, that I was grieving so that no matter what I did to other people was worthy of your compassion and approval? Or is consistency not a good thing to you?

She could have kept her mouth shut about this, but wanted the spotlight. She could have spoken up and asked a ruined country for forgiveness for her part in providing a trump administration as a legacy for her daughter. Instead, instead of ruing her action, she asks us to feel bad for her while saying that she intends to keep on doing harm if she gets another chance.

Ahh. I have no interest in talking to you either. I'm done with fuzzy thinking and truth avoiders.

I hear exactly what you're saying...I didn't attack her, nor would I.

Would I say "What you are feeling now is a direct consequence of your choice to vote for Trump?"

Yes, I would, because it's the truth.

This is the tip of the iceberg. This isn't the worst story we are going to hear. No one should suffer. No one should lose a loved one.

I equate EVERY one of the "But you PROMISED" stories to the old Harvey Korman & Tim Conway "Jaws" spoof on the Carol Burnette Show. Korman witnesses a guy swimming to shore who is eaten by a great white. Conway pauses reflectively for a moment and says "He woud have made it, too, if he wasn't wearing his LUCKY HAM."

This woman, as well as every other Trump voter, was wearing a lucky ham on Election Day.

Attack them? No. Hold them personally accountable for where we are at right now? Yes, I will do that, with no qualms, regardless of their circumstances.

Let's let the woman who just went through a horrific experience that most of us will hopefully never have to go through have some peace.

If we've reached a point where 'holding people accountable' matters more than simple human compassion then I'm out.

If she believed that he'd be the one to fix health care after Trump's party has been taking it apart for years and railing against it?

She's a moron.

It's all those "Bad Hombre" Mexicans and Isis who can be stopped from coming up and getting Granny, "blue collar workers who are given opioids just to shut them up" - and of course the teens who steal the opioids from Granny, et. all to party with - by just building a wall.
I'm sorry her daughter got hooked on opioids and o.d.'ed. But if she believed Drumpf, and still supports Drumpf, then she's om a rage and just wants to punish someone - anyone - for that loss. Hooking up with a bully in power is the best way to feel like one is in control when one hurts a bunch of people.
BTW, I doubt she ever really thought about consequences in voting and politics past what happens every April 15.
She's the type that just votes with her emotions - the "I'd like to go out to lunch with that person" type of voter.

Mon Jul 3, 2017, 04:22 PM
Jul 2017

I feel sorry for her loss too, but her grief has, as you stated, taken over her thought process and become ugly. More about making someone pay than it is actually preventing the next death.

While synthetic opioids tablets laced with fentanyl do cross over from Mexico, and other places, building a wall won't stop the illegal drug trade, or the illegal drug trade from doctors who are willing to provide the actual drug without any real need or checks.

Building a wall won't prevent poverty or create jobs in WV. It won't produce much needed health care. It won't improve education and it won't offer any real benefits in the lives of those most affected. Building a wall will not stop everything that goes into creating an addict.

You can't build a wall around the country and keep "bad" out. You can build a wall and scapegoat people who had no control over any of it. Which is what Trump, and those who support the wall, are doing.

Just looking for someone to blame, to get people to cheer about, in order to distract them from how bad they are being screwed over.

Did she think that Trump-of all people- had a solution to the Opioid crisis??? Building a Wall isn't going to keep all of the drugs out of the country/off the streets. I'm sure that she's devastated by the loss of her daughter but I would have trusted Hillary way more to help solve the problem than Trump. If Republicans succeed in passing their atrocious "health care" plan, things will be worse.

Wed Jun 28, 2017, 04:32 PM
Jun 2017

There's no question that this hers was the greatest loss a parent could face. You can't diminish or belittle it in any way.

But what gave her the impression that 45 would do anything about the opioid crisis. He has demonstrated throughout his life that he doesn't care about anyone who is not him. Hell, he has demonstrated that even having the same last name is no guarantee of support. Ms. Wilson, do you have any idea where the opioids are flooding into this country? I don't. But what made you think that a wall would make a difference. The only difference a wall would make is that the drugs might be more expensive. Also worth noting is that a large component of the opioid problem is not illegal immigrants or drug smuggling. It's abuse, and then some, of drugs that have been imported legally. Maybe eventually stolen and redirected to the illegal drug market, but imported legally.

It's a shame that something in Ms. Wilson, even as a democrat, could not allow her to see beyond her tragedy.

the way trump plans on dealing with the Opioid crises is to imprison people who sell it and also the ones who are addicted. If you are from another country you will be deported after being imprisoned. Probably the help for those addicted will be intense labor to take their mind off of their need for the drug. There is nothing good coming from this administration to help those who have addictions.
