10. It doesn't hurt...

but it is really just .

DU silent threads remind me of Republican "thoughts and prayers"...

30. It's done for us, not them. We come together to feel sad and acknowledge.

Of course none of the victims' families know. We're not fools. Neither do families know about any coming together when a tragedy happens or someone we feel a connection to dies. But we know.

14. No, they don't.

Dead people don't need funerals, either. Nor do they need family and friends getting together after a funeral, for a meal, etc. Dead people do not require, or benefit, from the types of rituals or dietary needs of living people.

But living people do, generally speaking, benefit from funerals, etc. Hence, an OP/thread such as this is intended to allow the good people here to reflect upon the strangeness and even cruelty of life. It allows them an opportunity to experience a sense of humanity in a manner that really should not offend anyone. Indeed, those who are offended by such expressions might do well to exercise their right to simply not read -- much less respond -- to such conversations.

16. I never said I was offended,

I just wonder at the whole "thoughts and prayers" thing when it isn't even communicated to the victims.

17. Nor did I specify you.

I will note, however, that in post #10 you did say, "DU silent threads remind me of Republican 'thoughts and prayers'..."

19. So now you are specifying me, ok. I am still not offended. I just don't see the point.

21. I agree.

I responded to you, specifically.

And I agree that you don't see the point.

Years ago, in a four-part interview I did with Onondaga Chief Paul Waterman, he said, "I'm not sure everything can be explained. Some things you either understand, or you just don't. Maybe the goal should be to teach respect for other people, even if you don't fully understand them." This was in part of a conversation regarding how different people respond to death, and funeral rituals, etc.
