US Airways plane gets stuck in soft spot on pavement at Reagan NationalBy Martin Weil, Updated: Sunday, July 8
The Washington Post
Things were proceeding normally Friday evening as a US Airways flight was leaving the gate at Reagan National Airport to begin its flight to Charleston, S.C.
But the temperature reached 100 degrees in Washington on Friday and that apparently softened the airport paving enough to immobilize the airplane. The small vehicle that usually tows planes away from the gate tugged and pulled, but the plane was stuck.
It was apparently a soft spot caused by the heat, airline spokeswoman Michelle Mohr said, and the airplane wouldnt move.

(27,247 posts)The high temperature today only reached 73 degrees F, and the low temperature was 68. We had a period of heavy rain last night, and there was some pretty heavy rain this morning as well.

However, today promises to be hot and muggy.

(3,334 posts)It seems like every mid-October, there is a storm that rolls through and clears out the mugginess, leaving cool crisp days in the fall.

It was taken last July. The weather on that day was comfortable.

(4,452 posts)Not too many understand the difference between concrete and asphalt. Asphalt is cheap and quick to deploy but you have to maintain it constantly and the lifespan might be a decade. If you use concrete, good concrete, you will probably get five decades with very little maintenance. I've got roads I can walk to that were done in the 30'swith concrete and they are in better shape than the asphalt crap that is only 10 yrs old.
FarCenter
(19,429 posts)Asphalt is basically the waste material generated by oil refineries. As refining volumes fall and refineries close, it will become more expensive.
Natural gas is used to make concrete.

(4,452 posts)The last few years around here and in WV, they don't fix the roads to their previous state they just make them passable. I've got no problem with gravel and dirt roads but it frost's my cookies when the wear and tear is caused by mining and logging trucks.
There are days I keep my long gun handy and dream of shooting out the tires of one of those tri-axle monsters.

(26,250 posts)I think we finally stayed below 90, yesterday, and down to 64, last night. Such sweet relief. My house air temperature is FINALLY below 90 - or better yet, far below 100! I have a feeling that I might make up for my week's worth of sleep deprivation, today.

Lows this week in the low 90's and the highs will be around 113.
thelordofhell
(4,569 posts)They have to verify the weight of the aircraft in order to make sure they won't sink in the tarmac. So it causes delays. But even during the 122 degree day, it just delayed the flights.

(795 posts)The plane was a small 50 seat regional jet, that wasn't even full. It took them 3 hours to figure out, that all they needed a larger push-back.
