Why do you think that Trump tried to replace AF 1 crew with his own crew?

Remember some weeks back ( I know, I know, way too much stuff happening)
Trump wanted to remove the crew of Air Force One and use his? hand picked crew.
That request was denied, thank god.

any ideas on why he-they would do that?

The rational me from 8 months ago would say it's because he's an idiot and quite possibly insane. The present day me driven to become completely irrational because of the Trump "presidency". Thinks its because he had plans to fly that fucker straight to Putin, or some such piece of gibbidlyflip straight out of a Madame Secretary plot-line.

No, not some tweet from someone who specializes in fake news or "anonymous sources".

9. Paranoia

He thinks everyone is out to get him. Plus I'm sure he would like a secure plane filled only with the ears of the people he trusts. In his pea-sized brain, the pilots of AF1 might be listening in to his conversations. He is too dumb to realize that probably every inch of AF1 is monitored. Just a guess...

11. Assuming this report is true, AF1 belongs to the Air Force (hence the name)

and it is flown by Air Force officers, not civilian pilots. SCROTUS has no control over who flies AF1. He'd want to pick his own crew for no other reason than it's because he wants people he "owns" to work for him.

19. AF1 is not a plane. It is a call designation for air traffic control.

Any plane the president steps in automatically has the call designation "Air Force One". If Trump wanted to fly around in a Cessna it would be identified as AF1. The President is the CIC. He certainly can have whoever he wants as the crew on whatever plane he is flying. People who suggest otherwise have no understanding of either our military or our government.

20. I do understand that, actually; there was no need for you

to be insulting. I'm aware also that AF1 is an ATC call sign and not an airplane. I had in mind the B-747 that is usually used as AF1, and that aircraft will be flown by military officers. As a retired lawyer who has taught constitutional law and who holds a commercial pilot certificate I'm pretty familiar with both aviation and our government.

25. You said the CIC has no control over who flies AF1.

That is simply not true. Certainly most presidents would not try to micro manage who flies AF1 but if they wanted to they could.

27. The qualifications to fly AF1 (B747/VC25) are very stringent and are determined by the Air Force.

Last edited Mon May 29, 2017, 11:50 AM - Edit history (1)

I suppose if a president preferred qualified Colonel X over equally-qualified Colonel Y that preference would be honored. But he's not going to be able to have any old Tom, Dick or Jared whose father is a rich real estate developer or a Russian spy and incidentally has a private pilot certificate fly the thing no matter how loudly he whines.

21. Also, AF1 is the call sign only for an *Air Force* aircraft carrying a president.

It is not correct that a C-172 carrying a president would use the AF1 call sign; a civilian aircraft would use Executive One. The helicopter used by the president goes by Marine One.

28. It's only Air Force One if it's an Air Force aircraft

The president's helicopters belong to the Marine Corps. When he's aboard one, it becomes Marine One.

The plane Shrub Bush flew out to the carrier in the Codpiece Incident was a Navy jet, designated Navy One for Bush's time aboard.

If the Army had to take him anywhere, that aircraft would be "Army One."

If the president rides on a civil aircraft, that bird is named Executive One. It's apparently happened once: during the Arab Oil Embargo, President Nixon and his family needed to go from DC to LAX...so they bought them tickets on United.

I'm certain Trump's staff explained to him the technical difficulties revolving around him using his own plane as executive transport...between the communications equipment and the defensive equipment he'd have needed, it would have been an expensive chore to convert his plane. I would have put it a little more bluntly: "Look, you stupid mother fucker, do you realize how bad it's going to look if the Leader of the Free World and President to 350 Million Americans shows up in a foreign country in a plane with his own name painted on the side of it in three-foot-high letters?"

42. There is big evidence he wanted to use his 757 instead of Air Force One

http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/10/politics/donald-trump-air-force-one/

During the campaign, Trump pledged on the campaign trail to ground Air Force One and use his own jet. After he was elected the government told him that wasn't going to happen.

43. Who is "the government" that told him it wasn't going to happen?

Nothing in your link about that. Just more "unnamed sources". Trump made a lot of boasts in the campaign. Very few took them all seriously. But the larger point in the OP was that Trump was told what crew he could or could not have. Total BS without a particle of evidence.

34. Not quite true, there are multiple call signs

AF1
Marine 1 (Can be a helicopter or plane)
Army 1 (helicopter) -- never happened
Navy 1 (either) -- GW Bush
Coast Guard 1 (either) -- Never activated, CG2 has been used by Biden
Executive 1 (private plane) -- Nixon used it

12. Did he really request this?

I never heard this one. It's kinda hard to keep up with his idiocies.

Good grief! AF-1 doesn't belong to him, it belongs to all of us! He just can't have his way all the time.

I'd certainly chip in for one-way deluxe airfare to Moscow if he promises to stay there.

I wonder if he figured if he had his own pilots he'd try & force them into signing a non-disclosure agreement. An agreement he's notorious in enforcing.

I've seiously wondered if he hasn't tried this with the federal employees that surround him. Illegal as it is, I can see him doing it anyway. That's something a court wouldn't uphold if say, Sean Spicer wrote a tell-all book a few years from now.

Four years of Trump-Pence is too long for our country to wait without a President to credibly guide our nation.

and naturally he would charge the taxpayer for it.
But he told in no uncertain terms AF 1 had to be his plane.

31. The Boeing Company is named after the man who founded it

William Boeing, a segregationist, started the Boeing Airplane Company after he bought a plane from someone else, broke it, and found out it would take a long time to get the parts to fix it.

38. It was pretty common in his era

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Boeing

"Between 1935 and 1944, William Boeing and his wife Bertha set aside a large tract of land north of the Seattle city limits for subdivision, including the future communities of Richmond Beach, Richmond Heights, Innis Arden, Blue Ridge and Shoreview.[7] The Boeings placed racially restrictive covenants on their land to enforce segregation, forbidding properties from being "sold, conveyed, rented, or leased in whole or in part to any person not of the White or Caucasian race." Non-whites could only occupy a property on the land if they were employed as a domestic servant "by a person of the White or Caucasian race.""

He was probably more concerned about having to live near Native Americans than African-Americans...if you go to https://www.eopugetsound.org/terms/212, you'll quickly learn there are twenty tribes in the Puget Sound Watershed.
