https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-trump-administration-just-imposed-a-massive-tax-increase-you-may-have-missed-it/2017/05/26/ce7eb6e8-4152-11e7-9869-bac8b446820a_story.html?The new tax, 19 percent or more of premiums, will be added on top of the cost of policies purchased through the individual-market health insurance exchanges. It is a result of Trumps decision to create as much chaos as possible in the health-care market in this case by not committing to continue to reimburse billions of dollars of cost-sharing payments owed to insurers just as they set prices for next year. And the president couldnt have been more clear about why hes imposing this tax: He thinks disrupting the Affordable Care Act exchanges, which serve more than 12 million Americans, will force Democrats to agree to proposals in his budget and in the House health-care bill that would take coverage away from tens of millions.
I thought Republicans were anti-tax !!!!! What the hell is going on??

(4,959 posts)that we downgraded to a crappy bronze plan with a huge deductible and other OOP expenses. We're still paying more than we did last year.
Honestly, a 19% increase (as a tax? wtf) would make the premium prohibitively expensive.
This is my situation - there are millions of others like me or in even worse shape. At least my spouse and I are healthy - if we actually had a bad accident or illness, the out of pocket costs would break our bank. The ACA barely made insurance affordable as it was originally, let alone actual care (I'm being honest - while in relative terms it seems great, it was still far more favorable to insurance companies than the people of this nation who need health care).
Add a 19% tax while insurance companies are jacking up the rates anyway, and it may as well be bust.
Fuuuuuuuck.

(28 posts)I'm self-employed, so I have to buy coverage on the exchanges. As it is, my premiums this year are currently almost as high as my mortgage. Any increase at all means I just won't have the cash. So for the first time in my life, I'm going to be without health insurance. I'm 56 and healthy, thank heavens.
Thanks, evil bastards. Just... thanks.

(13,776 posts)And I'm sorry about the cost of your health insurance. I just absolutely cannot believe the United States--of all countries!--doesn't ensure that medical care is available to its citizens as part of the whole "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" thing. It's almost as basic a need as food and shelter. The imagination boggles at what other countries must think of us.
Batship
(28 posts)And I couldn't agree more. I just can't wrap my head around the position that anybody at all should profit from other people's medical problems. There's just no way that medical care should ever have been made a "for profit" commodity.

(37,648 posts)I get a subsidy. If I lose that subsidy, I can't afford the premium (it's about $900 for the cheapest).
BruceWane
(345 posts)The author of the article is using the word "tax" in a figurative sense.
Trump and the republicans have said they plan to hold up subsidy payments to insurance companies as way to bring democrats to make a deal.
Within a few weeks, insurance companies are required to declare their rates for the coming year, so they could very well factor the loss of the subsidies into premiums, causing an increase estimated as high as 20%. That's from this factor alone; could be even more when considering rising health care costs.
So it's not actually by definition a "tax", but since it's a cost that could be extracted from marketplace health insurance users that is caused by the federal governments actions, it can certainly be considered as a figurative tax.
The word "tax" gets attention. "Marketplace health insurance cost increase due to political BS" gets less.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield NC wants an average rate hike of 22.9 percent.
The company would have asked for just an 8.8 percent increase if Trump guaranteed payments of cost-sharing reductions to insurers.
Experts say uncertainty over those payments could impose a 20 percent or more surcharge on individual health plan prices in 2018.
