German reporter seeking closeted atheists to interview

Dear Alexander,

The Freedom From Religion Foundation is forwarding the media request below, pertaining to this German reporter's interest in interviewing atheists or nonbelievers in the U.S. who are fearful of outing themselves as atheists due to possible reprisal, whether you live in the Bible Belt or not. If you are interested in speaking with this journalist, please contact him directly; do not reply to FFRF. Let him know if you want to use a pseudonym or first-name only:

"My name is Sebastian Gubernator, and I am a reporter with DIE WELT, one of Germany’s major newspapers.

I stumbled upon the Freedom From Religion Foundation and various stories of atheists living in the Bible Belt when CNN covered the topic three years ago. Since then, I cannot stop thinking about it. The reason is fairly simple: I grew up in an evangelical family and distanced myself from religion when I was a teenager. Being raised in Germany, this was a relatively easy process for me, but I can at least partly imagine how being an atheist in conservative parts of the United States must be like.

Apparently, it is quite a scandal that some people cannot reveal their non-faith within fearing consequences – in the year 2017! And it seems to me that these problems might have increased since Donald Trump became president and made ignoring scientific knowledge part of his policy. Therefore, I want to cover this topic for my newspaper, and I am trying to get in touch with people in the Bible Belt who have not outed themselves as atheist, because they fear losing their jobs. Or their friends. Or their families.

Would you be able to get me in touch with as many of them as possible?

Best,
Sebastian
