2. Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah. The Senate president pro tempore.

If this thing shakes out in the normal line of succession, but why would anything about this mess be normal?

3. They'd have to be impeached pretty much simultaneously to reach Hatch

Otherwise, if Pence was impeached, his VP would just become president.

4. Thing is trump won't be impeached.

All the investigations won't have the power to get the congress to bring charges.

Unless he gives up and resigns, He'll do his 4 years and then be gone.

5. pence and trump will not get removed at the same time.

even granting the assumption that both go before their term is up (still unclear for benedict donald, and very unclear for pence):

one will get removed or otherwise leave office prematurely, a new veep will be appointed and confirmed, then the other will be removed or leave office prematurely.

the new appointee (think gerald ford) will become president.

6. This is not the line of sucession to a Throne...

people just don't move up a notch, if Trump gets impeached, Pence becomes President and gets a new VP confirmed. Now, if either the House or Senate is in democratic hands and they stall on confirmation and there is no VP when Pence is impeached then the speak to the house will be President (Ryan has to be speaker at that moment to become President)

7. Impeached

and convicted by the Senate.

And it's assumed a president would at that point resign.

8. Ryan can't be impeached.

I believe he could be voted out of the position by the House, but they'd probably then vote in a new Speaker soon thereafter.

Plausibly if somehow both Trump and Pence are impeached simultaneously, and Ryan has been removed as speaker and a replacement hasn't been voted on, it would go to the Senate President pro tempore, which here would be Orrin Hatch.

But I don't think we'll see Ryan removed, nor Pence impeached.

They'll hopefully impeach and remove Trump if he hasn't resigned yet, but that will be it. Congressional Republicans will fight for Pence and Ryan but they won't fight for Trump IMHO.

However, if Trump alone is impeached, Pence will be forced either to pardon him--which will look bad on him--or watch the person who chose him to be Vice President possibly go through criminal prosecution. He can't escape either way looking good, and it's going to limit his ability to get things done. That's why I'm not opposed to just letting Pence take over, as much as I dislike him. He'll be a lame duck from Day 1.
