And, btw, to his critics, I'd ask - what's it to you that President Obama can get paid a small fortune for making a speech, now that he's out of office? Isn't he allowed to make a living? Isn't he allowed to command a princely paycheck, considering his resume? That resume means nothing? Those past achievements mean nothing? All those sacrifices he's made throughout his life in service to the public and for the public good mean nothing? I would hope he'd be paid HANDSOMELY for WHATEVER he does from here on out. To me, he's worth it. And he's certainly earned it. Hillary too. I think both of them deserve it, especially considering all the shit each of them has taken - FOR YEARS.

(101,235 posts)And now this. We can't win if we keep fighting the same battles, and we need to get focused and organized in 2018 if we're going to beat Trump and send the GOP packing. If not, then mark it as "same shit, different year".

(898 posts)a super 1%er? Obama is the best leader the Democrats have had in my 50 years, but everyone has a tin ear sometimes. Him too. I remember being in the UK just before the Brexit vote and he came out with that "back of the line" stuff about a new trade agreement. That was the worst thing he could have said given the rebellious mood in the UK just before the vote.

He didn't screw workers out of wages. He didn't screw contractors out of wages. He didn't set up a fake university to steal peoples' money. He doesn't take bribes from Russia or launder money for him.

(11,767 posts)However, why would you criticize someone for giving a speech to Wall Street businesses. He was the President, he is important, and he may have something to offer the employees of the firms that are contracting with him to present.
He may be giving a speech about the need for diversity in hiring, or like Hilary, on the importance of hiring women, or equal pay. We don't know for sure, but there is not anything inherently wrong with giving a speech on Wall St.
I have been critical of the President, but when I saw the headlines on Salon, I thought, "so what". He is speaking to Wall St. for 400k. That is a nice haul. I wish I could command that price. "Good for him". He deserves to be able to make some money.
If it turns out that he shared information with Wall St on how to circumvent regulations, or that he was bashing, "those stupid liberals who voted for me", then we will have some problems.
Wall Street is not the devil. Unregulated, corrupt and greedy CEO's and lobbyists who push bad public policy from Wall St. are bad, but most people on Wall St. are just making a living.

Making a few assumptions: if your group of the Dem party gets there way and pushes the progressives out, I think you will be surprised to find that winning elections will become very difficult.
This is a time to actually try and unite the left. Either party could fracture at this point. Whichever fractures first will probably take a decade or two to get back to power. Maybe we should make sure it is the Republican and not the Democratic party.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)Nobody is trying to push out progressives from the Democratic Party. Democrats want more people to JOIN the party and BECOME actual active and loyal Democrats. But in pursuit of that goal, that doesn't mean that loyal Democrats such as myself and others must remain silent while being smeared and attacked, or when "some" are willing to negotiate away women's rights, or use women's rights as a bargaining chip.
But you're not suggesting that. I'm just saying.

(1,701 posts)that liberals are not supposed to be wealthy. Some on the left have picked this up without thinking how it feeds into a false right-wing narrative that liberals or leftists all hate capitalism. There is nothing that these people hate more than a successful liberal person, for that wrecks their argument that those who criticize unregulated capitalism are motivated by envy, not by a sense of justice or simple fairness.

(985 posts)and try to imply that if someone is successful, they're hypocrites for arguing that there should be a progressive income tax with a healthy, functioning government to help the less fortunate. The truth is that they're the opposite of hypocrites because their positions aren't based on personal gain, but morality and a belief in a healthy society.
They forget that FDR actually saved American Capitalism from itself in the 30's when other countries were becoming communist or fascist, FDR, a relatively wealthy man himself, advocated for regulations to control the excesses of capitalism in order to preserve the system and make it more equitable.
His cousin Teddy, also fairly well off, though a Republican, also wanted to reign in the worst impulses of the rich and powerful during the Progressive Era and actually ran against his former party when his successor began to side with the wealthy.
