Alabama Megachurch Close to Creating Its Own Police Force

In an unprecedented move, the Alabama state Senate has approved a bill that would allow a Birmingham megachurch to create its own police force. These “church cops” would have the same authority and power as regular police officers, and would be permitted to carry guns. The big difference: they would answer to church officials instead of the government.

The leaders of Briarwood Presbyterian Church say the security of their congregation is a top priority, and they’ve been lobbying to create a police force for a while now. Church officials argue that Briarwood “needs its own police officers to keep its school as well as its more than 4,000-person congregation safe.”

Some Alabamians were astonished to hear about Briarwood’s plans to blend the duties of Church and State. Since police departments are a government institution, the decision to create a church police force lands on shaky legal ground. Indeed, the Constitution indicates that church and state must remain entirely separate of one another.

The ACLU called the Alabama bill “plainly unconstitutional,” and insists that such legislation “unnecessarily carves out special programs for religious organizations that inextricably intertwine state authority and power with church operations.”

This country gets stranger all the time .............. Christian soldiers next

3. "Don't you worry now, our police are handling it..."

That's how I see it too, muntrv.

There's something dirty going on here they want to cover up.

4. Who would oversee this force?

Who would make sure they don't break any laws themselves?

6. This is the kind of police state the right wing wants. No government, all clergy.

No accountability either. Be afraid, be very very afraid.

7. How is this any different from what those who are advocating for Sharia Law want?

They basically want their own Theocracy that does not have to live under the secular laws of our democratic system. Does this mean they can kill or harm civilians who are not part of their church and not have to answer to our LE officials? Are they required to be ONLY under their own jurisdiction and no other?

I don't see how any court could find this not in violation of the constitution. Most of these fundie freaks would be up in arms if Muslims or Jews tried to enact such laws in their own communities.

9. The Racist, Homophobic History of an Ala. Church Gunning for Its Own Police Force

While advocates of civil liberties decry a powerful Alabama politician’s effort to push through a bill that would give a lily-white suburban church its own police force, many are unaware of the church’s long history of troubling race relations.

Just a hunch, I think they've got some problems with rapes and assaults within their own community they'd like to cover up. There's some real bad apples among those patriarchal and privileged white Christian males.

11. These are the kinds of people who *SHOULDN'T* have their own police force.

They're protecting criminals, and it's only a matter of time before it becomes self aware. With no accountability or ethics standards, things could get really ugly really quickly.

10. So, when their cops kill someone - and they will

What does Briarwood Presbyterian have that's worth someone's life? I know that in the popular culture it's perfectly acceptable to gun someone down if they're a physical threat or if they want to take your stuff, but that's not what the Bible says.

I wonder if Briarwood is going to be in line for government funds in any law enforcement revenue sharing scheme? Will they be able to do the asset forfeiture thing so popular among police departments around the country as a way of financing swell toys like battering rams and tanks?

This is just so wrong on so many levels.
