Sat Apr 15, 2017, 09:00 PM
Apr 2017

Yes this 500th anniversary is actually a VERY BIG DEAL for Catholics and Lutherans to bury the hatchet.
I say it's about time too, should have happened long ago.

But anyway it's an important first step and will receive worldwide attention from religious folks.
That doesn't include Trump obviously. My guess is he doesn't even know about it.

Most people already know this, but Germany is literally half Catholic and half Lutheran because of the split that happened 500 years ago. The Catholic priest Martin Luther was excommunicated without a hearing or a trial before the faithful.

Ironically pretty much everything Luther taught is now incorporated into current Catholic teaching, with the one exception that Lutheran priests can marry and Catholic priests can't. Well who was right about that one? Anyway it's high time that these 2 major religions be reconciled in the spirit of ecumenism.

I'm happy that Obama recognizes this historic step in Catholic/Protestant realignment.

There is much less acrimony between the two churches than there was when I was growing up.

There was always talk about rescinding Luther's excommunication. I hope it happens.

... and I hoped the German Pope Benedict would have done it.

Luther should have never been excommunicated, and the Catholic Church should rescind it as soon as possible.
Well I guess Benedict didn't stay in there long enough, but Pope Francis (the cool Pope) probably will.

I'm happy that it will be done in my lifetime.
