Southern California is only "blue" because the voters in general realize have to play nice with their neighbors and environment to prosper. It's still a place that people from all over come to and settle in; not necessary are born and raised.

A lot of the old-timers are John Bircher bigots, and the moneyed class in California - the developers - are notoriously Libertarian in nature. Especially the "petit-rentier" class of middle class Southern Californian apartment building owners and property flippers that sprang up during the 1950's - 1970's housing boom. The type who believe anyone should be able to have a life just like "Father Knows Best" or "Leave it to Beaver".
My step-daughter's inlaws are of that class - clueless "I got mine" types who can't understand why their kid just floats aimlessly through life.
And yes, they're Drumpf voters because, well, the Democrats allow too many people to live off their tax dollars instead of making their money "through hard work without any help from the government" and investing their money, just like they were able to do - through early pensions (SiL's grandfather was a Union city firefighter until he quit with very nice good pension after 20 years for family issues, and grandmother was in city Administration) and the WWII G.I. bill the Great-Grandfather had that enabled him to purchase - and sell - several residential properties as the family grew.
No help from the government whatsoever...
