Human Rights Campaign honors Senator Tammy Baldwin

During Womenís History Month, HRC honors Senator Tammy Baldwin for her tireless work in advocating for LGBTQ rights.

Senator Baldwin broke two barriers the night she was elected to represent Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate in 2012. Not only was she the first woman elected from the Badger State, she was also the first open lesbian elected to serve in the upper chamber of Congress.

Baldwinís achievement garnered her The Advocateís Person of the Year in 2012. She told the magazine that she found inspiration in Geraldine Ferraro, who in 1984, became the first woman ever nominated for vice president on a major partyís ticket. Just as the nomination of Ferraro inspired women like Baldwin to serve in public office, the Wisconsin senatorís win is sure to have a ripple effect for women and LGBTQ people across the country as well.

Since her historic election to the Senate, Baldwin has been one of Capitol Hillís most progressive voices and has championed LGBTQ legislation during her tenure in office. She co-authored The Equality Act in 2015, which provides basic non-discrimination protection.

12. It can be discouraging being represented by 3 Republicans in Congress

But I am hopeful and inspired by the work of the incredible Democratic Senators.

5. That's nice and all, but....

I won't soon forget that the HRC initially endorsed (R) Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois over Tammy Duckworth.

There's was another republican official they endorsed, I just don't feel like looking that up now.

6. You seem a bit confused.

The thread is about Tammy Baldwin, not Tammy Duckworth. We are recognizing a great Democratic senator who has shown leadership in many ways, and who has been a great example for the gay community.

And WTF does Hillary have to do with this thread?

7. Not confused at all.

I know the difference between the two senators and the two states.

8. OMG... she is such an inspiration! I like how she speaks: HONEST and DIRECT but without offending.

I'm glad she's not one of those Senators who feels like being a "bully" is the way to better argue a position.

I like how she's always trying to bring people UP and build coalitions rather than being one of those finger-wagging "blame everyone else" politicians who think that attacks and negativity are helpful. She sets a good example that other Senators would be smart to follow.

Again, she's positive, she's uplifting, she has a message of inclusion and hope. She's not afraid to acknowledge and EMBRACE all the things that make us who we are, that drive how we think. Whether it's one's sexual identity, or one's race, or one's religious beliefs... she gets it!

13. She's a great Senator

I'm glad to see she got the award from HRC! She's one of the many women who were inspired by Geraldine Ferraro and now she's inspiring to other young women to get involved politically.

16. Mark Kirk is in Illinois,

not Wisconsin. Someone else already tried that in this thread.

Three cheers for Tammy Baldwin.

18. I didn't try anything, simply confused Tammy Duckworth with Tammy Baldwin.

However, I did find out that the HRC unendorsed Kirk after making disgusting statements about Duckworth just before the election in November.

17. Have a running email dialogue with her...

But can't seem to get her to budge on her support for the S164 bill, the "War on Wolves" which would eradicate the MacKenzie Gray Wolf in Wisconsin...eradicate, as in, open season on these majestic beauties.
