I got into a bit of a discussion with someone a year or so ago on this topic. She was absolutely convinced that marijuana inevitably let to stronger stuff.

She got very angry and defensive when I pointed out that the real gateway drug is nicotine, as in cigarettes. She smoked herself for many years, and so it hit a nerve.

I have yet to meet a stoner who harbored one mean thought . I recall once reading that at a police conference the person running it asked the assembled cops to raise their hands if they ever had a violent encounter with a person who was drunk - nearly all the cops raised their hands. Then he asked the same question if they ever had a violent encounter with a marijuana user - none raised their hands.

10. I suspect Sessions will abuse his power to go after pot users...

Sessions just HATES pot. He thought the KKK was fine until he learned some smoked pot. And he's made no end of ignorant statements that say more about him... after all if he WANTED to know WTF he was talking about... HE'D LEARN.

But like most with delusions of infallibility... on some level he values his own ignorance.

Hemp production was largely the reason the American colonies were settled- the age of largely naval warfare and empire building going on with countries like England and Spain resulted in a desperate need for farm land to grow hemp for sails and rigging. Our countries early TAXES were payable in hemp. Our founding fathers traded letters describing sexing the plants and sorting them by taste- something only done when one wants to get high on the female plant's bud. They gave out their favorite strains as gifts, ffs.

This plant is a DEEP part of our history and culture as a country and was largely socially acceptable until the prohibition era.

In the early 1900s, it was rebranded as "marijuana". Two reasons- profit and immigration. Hemp was cutting into timber industry profits. There was also a large wave of Mexican immigration at the time. Much as opium laws had been used to stop & detain Asian immigrants, various municipalities in the south set up anti-marijuana laws to harass, arrest and even evict the new wave of immigrants. A more modern equivalent can be found in NYC's stop and frisk practices of African Americans.

Very successful propaganda machine, as far as things go, with that drug. It was helped by crooked administrations like Nixon who used drugs as an excuse to lock up "hippies" and minorities. I suspect this is what Sessions really wants- a widespread excuse to persecute Hispanics and protesters & toss em into for-profit prisons.
