Hair stylist to Marla Maples: No free services in exchange for Inauguration Day 'exposure'

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/reliable-source/wp/2017/01/17/hair-stylists-snub-to-marla-maples-no-free-services-in-exchange-for-inauguration-day-exposure/

Though Donald Trump and his family project an image of boundless wealth, a Washington-based hairstylist says the president-elect’s second wife tried to get out of paying her to style her tresses and those of her 23-year-old daughter, Tiffany Trump, for Inauguration Day.

Freelance stylist Tricia Kelly says she was contacted by a longtime client with ties to the Trumps about a job coifing Marla Maples and the younger Trump daughter for the big event. Kelly expressed her interest and she explained her rates — a $150 fee to travel in addition to the cost of her services — but Maples, through her assistant, balked. “I was told they had a $300 budget for both of them for hair and makeup,” Kelly says.

After some back and forth, Kelly agreed to be paid $200 total and a makeup artist $150 to get the women camera-ready. That’s when Maples’s assistant came up with another proposal: Would Kelly and the makeup artist be willing to provide their services for free? In exchange, they would get “exposure,” and Maples would mention them on her social-media feeds, the assistant told her.

Kelly declined. “I was stunned,” she said. “I told them . . . I work for a fee, not for free.”

-snip-

But after The Washington Post contacted the PR representative, Kelly received ominous messages from her client, who had first put her in touch with Maples’s camp. “You are messing with the president of the United States,” the Maples contact wrote her, adding that Maples was worried about her financial situation with Tiffany out of college, ending child-support payments from the president-elect. “She is used to a certain lifestyle and you don’t understand that.”

4. I wonder if The Donald threatened to cut off alimony if she didn't go?

That he's cutting off money to his daughter now that she has graduated college shows how little he cares for family that he cannot use to feed his ego.

2. Are both his ex-wives going? It's like the whole harem is attending

That'll be quite a spectacle onstage. Donald and his wives.

3. Wow! Intimidating a hairstylist for refusing

To provide FREE services... Tiffany's out of school, no child support, Tiffany has expectations! That sounds like a personal problem, lady!

10. Doesn't Tiffany have a trust fund?

If so, she can just dip into it to pay her bills. If not, Dad can fork over the money.

7. "used to a certain lifestyle" - that looks like "screwing the less powerful", doesn't it?

If refusing to work for free for her counts as "messing with the president of the United States", then "the president of the United States" can damn well pay up, with that money he claims to have lots of.

8. Didn't Don the Con pull something similar?

I remember hearing that he stiffed a caterer and then said that she should be happy with the exposure she got instead of being paid.

12. I think that was the caterer for his wedding to Marla. The caterer almost went broke....

...because his/her staff still needed their paychecks, and all down the line people had worked to make that event: food, flowers, tablecloths, you name it.

Horrible horrible con-artists, the lot of them.

13. This is not surprising to me!

This is classic rich people style. Speaking as someone who worked in a grooming salon in a rich St. Louis county neighborhood and worked as a professional house cleaner in and around rich neighborhoods.
They always want the best but to pay the least. They want you to feel like just busting your ass for them should be payment enough.

14. A stylist should give up income so the wealthy one won't have to?

Marla should have to live on a hair stylist's income for a while and then re-evaluate which one can afford a cut.

15. If Ms. Maples is afraid of losing the lifestyle to which she's become accustomed...

...that means the stylist ISN'T "messing with the President", who seems happy to cut his old wife off as soon as he can.

What awful people.

Having the good sense to turn them down or insist on payment.
