A policy proposal touted by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. could unleash the vocal cords of nonprofit and religious leaders along with their donors pocketbooks.
Trump and Falwell consider the Johnson Amendment, a 1954 tax law barring tax-exempt organizations from overtly supporting or opposing political candidates and limiting their ability to lobby, as a suppression of free speech.
While Trump has broadcast his support of the repeal to evangelical voters in particular, it applies to a broad swath of charitable organizations receiving tax-exempt status for charitable, religious, scientific, educational and other purposes.
Opponents and skeptics said its repeal could turn private educational institutions, churches and other religious organizations and nonprofits into political action committees. They said the change would fuel already-growing concerns over the disproportionate power of money in politics.

In all candor, we couldve worked something out on the term for the secretary post, he said, but the family really didnt want me to go.
Falwell is a lawyer but his experience in higher education has been mostly at the university founded by his late father, Moral Majority leader Jerry Falwell.
Falwell said Trump planned to divide the secretary of education role in half. The secretary position would be responsible for colleges and universities and a separate official would oversee kindergarten through 12th grade.
