Nearly two-thirds of Republicans still believe Iraq had WMDs

How misinformed are Republicans about world affairs? If presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s assertion that Russia is “without question our number one geopolitical foe” is any indication, then the answer would appear to be very.

A new poll supports that theory.

The poll, constructed by Dartmouth government professor Benjamin Valentino and conducted by YouGov from April 26 to May 2, found that fully 63 percent of Republican respondents still believed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction when the U.S. invaded in 2003. By contrast, 27 percent of independents and 15 percent of Democrats shared that view.

that they let them slip away? As if the kind of huge convoys it would take to clear out a nuclear or chemical facility, could get away across open desert to Syria or somewhere and not be detected.

They had a population unified in one thing - attacking the invaders. IEDs, home made devices, aged weapons, a horrible economic situation made worse when Rumsfeld fired the entire military, without disarming them first. THAT was their real weapon of mass destruction - the Iraqi people themselves.

I attended a forum a year or two ago at a community college in Kansas City, Kansas. There were three panelists: a local political figure and liberal, an "independent" who was "moderate," and a right-winger who was a former Marine in Iraq. He had lost his leg to an IED.

Anyway, this was during the "Muslim Mosque at Ground Zero" fiasco and the three argued their respective points. The ex-Marine (who wore shorts so we could see his artificial leg) denounced the Mosque, which was in reality a community center, and even told the audience that he found WMDs. The audience did a collective "WHAAAAA...???" (you could see the progressive looking at him in total disbelief) and he went on to say that he didn't understand why either Bush or the media didn't report it. But he said he saw them even though his own Boy George said he had gotten the intelligence wrong. Didn't he think the Bushistas and FOX would be all over the story if he had found them?

I suspect what he saw was equipment the US gave Saddam during the Iran-Iraq war but that was a couple decades earlier and involved the Reagan Administration. Anyway, we were all scratching our heads and looking at each other and shrugging our shoulders, but no way did he see the WMDs that Bush used as a reason to invade Iraq.
