Russia Seen Moving New Missiles To Eastern Europe

NPR
December 8, 20164:46 PM ET

In what could mark an escalation of tensions with the West, commercial satellite images suggest that Russia is moving a new generation of nuclear-capable missiles into Eastern Europe.

Russia appears to be preparing to permanently base its Iskander missile system in Kaliningrad, a sliver of territory it controls along the Baltic coast between Lithuania and Poland. Arms control experts shared fresh satellite imagery with NPR, which they say provides evidence that the Iskander will soon be housed in the Russian-controlled enclave.

The images show ground being cleared for tentlike shelters used at other Iskander bases, says Jeffrey Lewis, a nonproliferation expert at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. "The pattern, and the size, and the location strongly suggest to us that this is the beginning phase of construction of the shelters for Iskander," Lewis says.

4. So what does Putin want total annihilation?

Are we back to a ''Cold War'' with the Russians? I happen to like Russians and I'll just bet there are majority who can't stand Putin. So when we make derogatory remarks about Russia, remember it's made up of people just like the rest of us who want peace.

7. Unfortunately Vladimir "Il Duce" Trump has high approval ratings in Russia.

I like the Russian people, as opposed to Putin, a lot too. Politically, however, they have not evolved past wanting a strongman to tell them what to do and being aggressive toward the entire rest of the world. They like that.

It's not their fault. They missed the entire experience of most of the rest of the world with Democracy the last 100+ years and don't really understand its value.

8. Do you have a problem with the U.S. moving missiles into Romania?

Which the U.S. did in Sept., 2016. I do. Russia is moving its missiles into -- Russia! Kaliningrad is as much part of Russia as Hawaii is part of the U.S.

9. I have a problem with Putin apologists. I have a problem with false-equivalancy bullshit.

I have a problem with people I see (not you of course, as I'm sure you're not doing this in any way) running around the internets and some even this board, laying out the welcome mat for Trump and smugly pushing the same kinds of narratives we see from his merry band of crooks - those on the both the alt-right and alt-left.

Adieu

10. Pity. Kaliningrad would have made a lovely home for the UN.

It could have been wrested away from Russia right after the breakup of the U.S.S.R.

I'm not anti-NYC, but the UN there is subject to the whims of the U.S. government. Remember the Arafat fiasco?
