Trump adviser points to Kobach as source of unsupported claims about illegal voters

President-elect Donald Trump got his unsubstantiated talking point about millions of illegal voters from the top election official in Kansas, according to a Friday interview with Trump’s senior adviser.

During an appearance on ABC’s "Good Morning America," Kellyanne Conway, who managed Trump’s campaign during the final months of the election, told George Stephanopolous that the president-elect "has been talking to different people, including Kris Kobach of Kansas, about voting irregularities or the number of illegal votes that may have been cast, and I believe that he bases his information on that."

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach vigorously defended Trump’s claim about millions of illegal voters Wednesday after certifying the state’s election results. He did not say that he had been the president-elect’s source of that claim, which has been widely disputed by election experts and has no tangible evidence to support it.

"This is the problem with aliens voting and registering. There’s no way you can look at the voter rolls and say this one’s an alien, this one’s a citizen," Kobach said.

Stephanopoulos pressed Conway repeatedly on the veracity of the claim Friday. She again pointed to Kobach, saying that Trump has "been receiving information about the irregularities and about the illegal votes, particularly from sources, officials like Kris Kobach as I mentioned, but he is messaging to his supporters and to the rest of the country the way he feels."

Kris Kobach is the nation's number one hater of people of color, young people, Democrats in general. From authoring Arizona's notorious "papers please" anti-immigration law to coming up with the idea that Mexico will pay for Donald Trump's wall, Kobach has been a scourge on democracy, one that Kansas was unfortunately stupid enough to put into an office where he could do serious damage. As secretary of state, that's exactly what he's doing, and it's not confined just to Kansas. At Rolling Stone, Greg Palast has an alarming exposé describing a multi-state effort to deny millions the franchise this election.

It's called the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program, a system "being promoted by a powerful Republican operative" (that's Kobach) that purports to analyze voter registrations and find duplicates in other states, to determine if people are voting illegally in more than one state.

But Rolling Stone obtained a portion of the list and the names of 1 million targeted voters. According to our analysis, the Crosscheck list disproportionately threatens solid Democratic constituencies: young, black, Hispanic and Asian-American voters—with some of the biggest possible purges underway in Ohio and North Carolina, two crucial swing states with tight Senate races. On its surface, Crosscheck seems quite reasonable. Twenty-eight participating states share their voter lists and, in the name of dispassionate, race-blind Big Data, seek to ensure the rolls are up to date. To make sure the system finds suspect voters, Crosscheck supposedly matches first, middle and last name, plus birth date, and provides the last four digits of a Social Security number for additional verification.

In reality, however, there have been signs that the program doesn't operate as advertised. Some states have dropped out of Crosscheck, citing problems with its methodology, as Oregon's secretary of state recently explained: "We left [Crosscheck] because the data we received was unreliable."

2. Yes, I wholeheartedly agree. Kansas gave this twit the power to prosecute voter fraud.

Since that time, he found 6 cases, prosecuted 4 who were found guilty of misdemeanors and paid modest fines. All were republicans, btw. He has campaigned here saying he knew of 100's in Kansas. The lie has grown when his audience is nationwide.

if you consider Democratic votes (which clearly seem to be what's targeted by Crosscheck) to be illegal, then it's absolutely correct that if you throw out all the "illegal" votes, it was a Republican landslide in the popular vote
