Time to Look at Your State and Local Government.

If you've been ignoring state legislative and local elections, you've made a huge mistake. During the Trump administration, it will be the states that preserve your rights. If your state is controlled by Republicans, you may not have any protection at all.

In 2017 and, more importantly, 2018, more elections will be held. If you normally pay little attention to those, it's time to change your focus or plan to move to a state with a reliable Democratic population. If you're a woman, for example, count on the Trump administration to move in the direction of removing your reproductive rights. If you're part of the LGBTQI community, your state's attitudes are going to matter more and more, starting on January 20, 2017.

If you normally don't bother with off-year and midterm elections, it's time to get really, really active in those races. Only your state and local government will be able to cushion the blows delivered by a Republican-controlled federal government. You many need to rely on states' rights to protect you.

I'm not overstating the importance of this in any way, either. Things are going to get ugly. Make sure your state doesn't make them uglier. It's going to be up to you.

2. I've been advocating for that for decades.

All politics are local. All. We ignore our local elections at our peril.

Here's a thought for people who don't believe that: Turnouts in odd-year and midterm elections are the lowest turnouts of all. A dedicated GOTV plan can reverse those elections in a single year. If the same number of Democrats turned out in 2017 and 2018 as turned out in 2016, we'd change things almost overnight.

Sadly, most people have no clue about the power of local elections. I wish people would think about those turnout numbers and change things up.

3. While our party has been focusing mostly on presidential elections

the thugs meanwhile have taken every local office from county clerk, JPs, and up, while we were asleep at the switch.

I have been accused, and rightly so, that I often don't see the trees for the forest. Well, that's exactly what we have done.

4. Time for us to wake up, then.

I've been calling for massive turnouts in odd-year and midterm elections for years and years. Nobody listens. The Republicans figured that out long ago, to our detriment.

5. Spot on. This is the major focus for Sanders and why he wanted the outreach chair so much.

He briefly went over some information on his plans for outreach in an interview with Amy Goodman just a few days ago:

Democracy Now! Special: Bernie Sanders on Trump's Victory & the Need to Rebuild the Democratic Party

NOVEMBER 29, 2016

~Snip~

SEN. BERNIE SANDERS: Well, there are not too many non-Democratic Democrats who are in the United States Senate, so it doesn’t say much. But yeah, it—but I think your point is that last week or two weeks ago Chuck Schumer, who is now the leader of the Democrats in the Senate, put me on leadership. And he gave me a position that I wanted, and that is to be chair of the outreach effort. And what I am going to do is use that position, with your help, with all of your help, to transform the Democratic Party. I think—you know, it is very easy to beat up on people when they’re down, and that’s not my intention. You know, Secretary Clinton and her supporters are hurting now. It’s not my intention to be beating up on them. But it goes well beyond the presidential race.

Right now in the United States, as you know, Mr. Trump will be inaugurated. Right now, the Republicans control the U.S. Senate. Democrats, I had hoped—we thought we had a better than even chance of gaining control. We did not. We’ll end up with 49 seats. Democrats picked up a few seats in the House, but the Republicans will continue to control the House. Not only that, in about two-thirds of the states in this country, there are Republican governors. And in the last eight or so years, Democrats have lost some 900 legislative seats in state capitols all over this country. So I think any independent assessment, without casting any blame, says the current approach has failed. All right? When you lose, you know, it’s like they always say about the football coach: You know, if you’re zero and 10, you’re not doing well. Well, the current approach clearly is not succeeding, and we need a new approach.

And the new approach, I think, is to, A, create a 50-state strategy. That means we start playing ball in states that the Democrats have conceded decades ago. But more importantly, we create a kind of grassroots party, where the most important people in the party are not just wealthy campaign contributors, but working people, young people, people in the middle class, who are going to come in and going to start telling us what their needs are and give us some ideas as to how we go forward. And I accept this responsibility as outreach chair with a lot of trepidation, but also with excitement. I’m going to be going around the country to try to do everything that I can to create a party which represents working people and not just the 1 percent...

Chuck Schumer on Sander and outreach efforts:

Chuck Schumer Is All In On Bernie Sanders’ Democratic Party

Michael McAuliff - 11/19/2016 12:10 pm ET | Updated Nov 20, 2016

“Bernie convinced me of this. Bernie asked me to do it, to organize it,” Schumer said, adding that he agrees with Sanders’ idea that the DNC needs to become more of an activist and organizing operation.

“So when we’re pushing for a strong college bill on the floor, there are hundreds of thousands of people on campuses across the country emailing, and tweeting and calling and protesting. And when we do minimum wage, there should be minimum wage workers all over the country pushing for that,” Schumer said. “That’s what Bernie wants to do with the DNC, and I completely agree.”

North Carolina will be having interim elections in 2017 due to redistricting. Something to consider for the near future:
