Authorities say there are multiple fatalities in an elementary school bus crash, CBS Chattanooga affiliate WDEF reported.

Sources told WDEF that as many as 12 passengers may have been killed on Monday. Authorities say there are multiple fatalities but have not said a number. The bus was carrying students from kindergarten through grade 6.

Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher said 35 students were on board on the bus when it crashed, according to WDEF. The Chattanooga Fire Department’s Public Information Director, Bruce Garner, said in a tweet that 23 patients were taken to hospitals in ambulances.

Colonel Tracy Trott of the Tennessee Highway Patrol tweeted that children were both killed and injured:

3. I can not begin to imagine

this is a horrible tragedy, I am shook up thinking about what the parents are going through, I can not imagine.

Right now, the number that has been confirmed is six children are dead. My heart breaks for the families.

and it's just before Thanksgiving and Christmas - awful.
