I don't read magazines anymore unless I'm in a waiting room, and still don't usually do it then. I would have to be very fond of a mag to pay 9 dollars for it. I can't think of one I'd pay that much for. Of course, the New Yorker has always had that sort of upper middle class reputation, so maybe they don't care. Their readership is probably dying out, though.
