One astonishing picture of Hillary Clinton shows who and what we've become

"Increasingly we prefer to be seen with each other, instead of looking at each other.

We live not to be there, but to be seen to be there."

1. Too young and pig ignorant to know that turning their backs like that

is just incredibly rude.

I can't wrap my head around the kind of egotism that requires a selfie under those circumstances.

3. There's a lot of social norms that have gone out the window because of phones unfortunately

I also see phones being used to avoid eye contact and IMHO that will lead to problems in the future.

Hillary or one of her surrogates going "why dont we all take a selfie with the candidate!"

This place gets dumber by the day:

http://qz.com/791437/presidential-debate-hillary-clinton-in-florida-and-the-story-behind-the-viral-millenial-selfie-photo/

And in a video filmed by none other than a heckling Trump supporter, you’ll see that after Clinton walks into the room, she says: “Anyone who wants a selfie turn around right now.”

People here are too god-damned stupid to check anything these days.

Every one of these threads reminds me of grandpa and a blinking 12:00 on a VCR.

My favorite Old + Tech was my mother asking how people got along before Google. Mom was born in 1934.

Of course, I read this post and replied to it on my phone, not making eye contact with anyone.

The fact that she's up on the box makes it easier, too.

I'm guessing this ain't the first time they've done this.

She is incredibly gracious after events, but she is coming off pneumonia and her staff is probably trying to streamline the process.

33. Call me crazy, but I suspect this wasn't a case of a roomful of people deciding simultaneously to

take selfies all by themselves at the exact same time.

In fact, I suspect the odds are staggeringly small that that was the case.

So maybe put the outrage - or "schooling" - on the back burner. Hillary doesn't look particularly peeved. It's possible this was a deliberate photo op scenario.

also, most of those "young people" look to be in their 30s, or older.

an iphone-enabled basket.

I wonder what would happen if I pointed out that the men in the crowd seem to be paying attention to Hillary and facing forward, and it seems to be entirely women taking the selfies?

Hmmm, probably better not to test those waters.

"I can't wrap my head around the kind of egotism that requires a selfie under those circumstances..."

As I can't imagine the conceit to that compels one to believe they have all relevant knowledge to judge a hundred other youths simply taking a picture.

No doubt, it's ethically convenient to hold oneself to a lower standard than we hold others to, but it's an obvious character flaw.

43. Um how do you expect 100 or more selfie people to preserve a photo for 40 years?

Their "cloud" will eventually rain away the image. Maybe if they tattoo it to their backside it will last. Or maybe if they print on archival paper and store the photo memory (which by facing away they only saw a digital image) in a safe an climate controlled environment it will survive...sure. It is for the grand-kids, I doubt it.

I got them by working very hard on many, many Democratic campaigns, and when the opportunity presented itself I asked nicely. And I actually have pictures with these people, as opposed to me taking a selfie near them.

Although I suppose they'd come to my house and pose for a picture in my bathroom if the donation was big enough...

Obviously Hillary is delighted to be a part of this selfie "group" shot. It's not kids disconnecting - it's people feeling more connected. I detect a serious old-timer's syndrome here in some of the comments. It's a much quicker and more effective way for people to get a shot of their President-to-be. I think this is a wonderful thing, and I ain't a young pup anymore. I applaud the enthusiasm here.

Is it hard to watch this, yes, but I think it is refreshing that young people are at a rally for Hillary. They like her enough to want to get a selfie that shows where they are. That is how this generation communicates.

Cut them some slack, there are things that annoy me too but I'm trying my best to remember what it was like to leave the house in a skirt at the knees and then roll it up on the school bus to be a mini. Remember "don't trust anyone over 30"?

This was clearly something that was done intentionally by Hillary and perhaps her campaign to offer folks a chance to do exactly this, which is shoot a selfie with her.

This says nothing about culture or whether we have become self-centered.

And almost certainly initiated by Hillary herself. Just judging by Hillary's expression plus the fact that most of the audience were doing this at the exact same time.

It would have been embarrassing (and possibly rude) if after Hillary said, "Okay, everybody can take a selfie with me now" everybody did NOT turn around, and just stood there with dumb faces.

For the people in here lamenting the "good old days," get with the times. Her campaign clearly arranged this and Hillary endorsed it -- that's the reason she's waving. Just look on social media, people LOVE getting selfies with people they admire, respect, or support. Rather than looking at the glass as half empty, how about the fact that it's overflowing with love and enthusiasm?

111. Ms. Clinton requested a group selfie. This post is silly.

http://mashable.com/2016/09/26/hillary-clinton-campaign-selfies/#qRloKp23waqY

The iconic photograph, captured by Barbara Kinney — a former White House photographer for Bill Clinton who is currently working full time for the Hillary Clinton campaign — perfectly highlights the essence of this generation's technological priorities in 2016.

Kinney told Mashable that the massive group selfie session was in fact requested by Clinton herself
. The candidate is no stranger to the art of selfie taking, and stopped by the overflow room at her campaign rally in Orlando to ensure supporters got a chance to see her in person.

<snip>

The photographer explained that after her speeches, Clinton sometimes goes to the overflow room to briefly say hello to an excited crowd.

Kinney said Clinton stood up on the podium and said, "Okay everybody, turn around and we’ll do a group selfie," before making the staffers standing next to her move out of the way so each side of the room could take an aesthetically pleasing photo...
