56. An old Rw ploy.

Designate one or two publicly visible Rs to be "skeptical" about a RW politician or policy, then watch in amazement as they are miraculously "won over" by the politician/policy at a later date.

Hewitt was just one of the designated skeptics for 2016. He was never really anti-Trump. He was playing his assigned role.

said that the Iraq War of being all about taking Iraq's oil and were accused of being paranoid/hyperbolic? Well, now we now have a Presidential candidate pretty much saying that that taking Iraq's oil (and, by extension, anybody's) would have been/would be justifiable. Why THIS would not immediately disqualify him as a Presidential candidate is beyond me.

Yes, they can "win" a place like Fallujah or Anbar Province but unless the US commits 10's of thousands of troops in each place we "win," we cannot hold these places.

52. Take the oil violates Geneva Conventions: WSJ article

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2016/09/08/trumps-take-the-oil-plan-would-violate-geneva-conventions-experts-say/

snip: “It used to be, to the victor belong the spoils,” Mr.Trump said. snip

But Laurie Blank, director of the International Humanitarian Law Clinic at Emory University School of Law, said Mr. Trump’s proposal would be a violation of the fourth Geneva Convention, as well as international agreements made at the Hague Conventions in 1899 and 1907.

“Under the fourth Geneva Convention, when you are an occupying power, you are a caretaker, you are administering the territory,” Ms. Blank said. “The idea is to keep it as close to status quo as possible and give it back. It’s not yours to do with it what you want.”

She also said that because Iraq is a sovereign nation, the U.S. can’t simply take its natural resources.

37. Trump Lays Out His Master Plan To 'Take The Oil' From Iraq

By TIERNEY SNEED
September 7, 2016

To the victor goes the oil!

That was the theme of Donald Trump's master plan for how he would keep the Middle East from reigniting after he swiftly dispatches the Islamic State as president.

Asked at the NBC News' Commander-In-Chief forum about he planned to keep the Islamic State out of Iraq once he defeated them, Trump returned to his oft-recited call for the U.S. to "take the oil" from Iraq, and even offered a few details how he would go about it as President.

"If we had taken the oil, you wouldn't have ISIS. ISIS formed with the power and wealth of that oil," Trump claimed.

Pressed to explained exactly how the U.S. should take the oil, Trump said, "You would leave a certain group behind and take various sections where they have the oil."

"Take the oil" How? Where is the infrastructure? How do you get the oil from the interior of a country where you just have a 'certain group' and then you 'take various sections' and ...?

The guy has absolutely NO specifics about anything and the media just lets him slide with these nonsense statements and 'the crowd goes wild'.

61. Trump’s talking about classified briefing may be most reckless thing he’s done in a while

by James Fallows
September 8, 2106

Last night, at the “Commander-in-Chief” forum, Donald Trump characterized what he had heard from intelligence officials in a classified briefing, and said why he believed the briefers agreed with his political perspective and shared his disdain for the current administration. I am not aware of any previous nominee ever having done anything of this sort.

--snip--

According to a story by NBC, two former heads of the CIA share the view that Trump has crossed yet another line. As Ken Dilanian and Robert Windrem report:

Former CIA and NSA director Mike Hayden, who opposes Trump, told NBC News that in almost four decades in intelligence “I have never seen anything like this before.” (JF note: Hayden, a retired four-star Air Force general, is no one’s idea of a political lefty, and is in the camp of national-security conservatives who oppose Trump.)

“A political candidate has used professional intelligence officers briefing him in a totally non-political setting as props to buttress an argument for his political campaign,” said Hayden. … “The ‘I can read body language’ line was quite remarkable. … I am confident Director Clapper sent senior professionals to this meeting and so I am equally confident that no such body language ever existed. It’s simply not what we do.”

60. Donald Trump On The Record: We Will Be One People Under One God

On Tuesday, Donald Trump delivered another of his infamous harangues. He was shooting for a theme of unity, but made a statement that is pointedly un-American and discriminatory.

One God? And which God would that be? Trump is demonstrating his innate bigotry with the suggestion that there is a single faith in America that takes precedence over others and unites the whole nation. There may be some Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and a vast array of Christian sects that disagree.

Once again he proves that he doesn’t understand America, its Constitution, or the principles for which it stands. Nor does he understand the religion he pretends to practice.
