CA Law bans minors from buying cough syrup (Starts Jan 1)

Starting January 1, children under 18 will not be able to buy over the counter cough syrup in California.

The new state law is the first of its kind in the U.S. The cough medicines contain dextromethorphan or DXM.

Lawmakers are banning the sale of the medicine to teens because many are using them to get high. High doses of DXM can produce hallucinations and other "highs" that are simliar to LSD or PCP.

In tonight's Healthy Difference on "Today's THV at 5:00" and todaysthv.com, Stefanie Bryant will have more on the ban.

9. I know. If we could just outlaw EVERYTHING, no one would EVER get high!

And of course, nothing- simply NOTHING- is more important than remaining ever-vigilant against the threat of someone, somewhere, getting high off something.

Except booze. And smokes.

Perhaps they don't realize or care that many people under 18 are, de facto, responsible for their own care. From personal experience, I know that California doesn't grant emancipation easily, and does not want "split up families" even when the parents are totally useless in terms of providing for their children. There aren't enough social services. And they want to disempower minors from purchasing cough syrup? Stupid priorities.

is the advertised ingredient they used to "sell" the shelf version of Sudafed after the real product went under lock and key. I may be way off on this, though.

5. Dextromethrophan is a couch suppressant; pseudoephedrine is a decongestant

The replacement for pseudoephedrine is something else, but it's still a decongestant (in theory).

I remember when the fake first hit the shelves and there were some initials after the name. Most of us noticed after buying it - when it didn't work.

I have the URI from Hell and have been signing for real pseudoephedrine and buying cough suppressant - guess I should stock up on cough suppressant since I live in CA and I think I'll be over this by March.

Kids steal or buy it and OD the shit out of it. Lots of cases of ER visits around here. Easier to get than weed.
