My brother is a moron.

He came over to pick some stuff up and he said that Hillary would be a disaster. I asked him why and he said she would start a civil war.

I rolled my eyes and asked him how she would accomplish that. He then told me she said she was going to shut down the NRA. I told him that she had never said any such of a thing. He insisted although he could not tell me when she said it.

Soooooooo. I asked him how she would shut down the NRA. That stopped him. He had to ponder that for a while before he said ' an executive order.' I told him those applied to the federal government and its employees and agencies. I also told him that a judge can issue a stay if they are brought to court and found to be lacking in some manner.

I asked him why he believed everything he heard and refused to find out what was really going on. I told him that there were plenty of arguments to be made not to vote for Hillary but all I hear is made up shit and that she is Satan. He just shrugged.

My brother has a BS in chemical engineering. He used to be able to think critically. Somewhere along the way his mind melted. I am not going to bother to try to correct him. He is certain he is right.

He likes Trump less but that is the only glimmer of sanity.

Her stubbornness and lack of critical-thinking skills has really affected our friendship that was once upon a time very strong.

i think he's been brainwashed by years of fox news, apparently it's on 24-7. we don't talk politics anymore.

as far as the hillary hate, there is a co-worker, very liberal, still pining for bernie (I supported Bernie until it was mathematically impossible for him to win and still support the man and the message). every time we talk i now have to remind him to check her CV - he cannot deny she has the experience, she knows the people personally all over the world, and she has been doing good work all of her life. yes, she is not perfect. but she will hold the country together. can't say the same for drumpf.

i also have a sister with whom i cannot really talk politics, but it's hard for me to believe she would vote for drumpf. i think her blinding came from hate radio. i live across the country from both and love them very much. so it's hard.

One was talking to the other and sitting on a new bicycle. His friend asked, when did you get a new bicycle? His friend replied, yesterday I was walking down the sidewalk and this beautiful blond came pedaling up on this bike. She jumped off and took all her clothes off and said take whatever you want, so I took the bicycle. His friend replied, smart choice, the clothes probably wouldn't have fit you anyways.

Bill was supposed to take their guns.
Obama was supposed to round them up.
Actually the last Prez to grab guns was GWB (see New Orleans post Katrina).
Hillary won't grab their guns but hopefully try to make it harder for dangerous people to amasse an arsenal and shoot up a movie or school.

Anytime someone makes one of these ridiculous assertions, ask a question. "Hillary's gonna start a civil war!" Calm question: How? What's the mechanism? Walk down that path a few steps together, applying a few facts along the way. At the very least, you won't hear that nonsense anymore as the other person actually figures it out for himself that his fear is groundless. They'll probably be on to something else next time, but patiently repeat the process. If you're going to turn someone from the political wasteland, it takes time. After it happens enough times, they may actually come up with the refutations on their own.

the POTUS is an all powerful position. They hear how the POTUS "runs the country" and is the "most powerful person in the world." Executive Orders seems like some power of dictation - though they are limited by the law and the constitution and the courts have decided such cases.

My nephew who is young had two opinions 1) The POTUS should have to be from the military and 2) The SCOTUS must have 4 cons and 4 libs and one neutral. I explained the constitution did not require the first and that the way the justices are picked means the second cannot be. This kid is majoring in criminal justice and informed me the exclusionary rule was not right. He has time to learn, hopefully.

My brother is a retired professor of law - brilliant in his field - has written several law books - plays chess online and with a chess club - has other interesting hobbies - photography and gardening.

However he read Ann Rand in the seventies (as did I) but he was persuaded that it made sense; we both grew up in a liberal Democratic home, but now his political views are OFF THE WALL. We try not to even converse or mention politics, but I get a few email's now and then from him that I'm sure come from some far-right source; he thought Obama was a complete fraud. Last week I got an article from him which indicated he does not believe in global warming. Despises Hillary. I can't believe he would vote for Trump, but probably will go libertarian. Living in a southern state for 35 years as also made him racially intolerant. I've also heard intolerant comments about Italians from him. WHY WHY WHY?????? He's my brother -- and we have a lot in common - same crazy sense of humor - I love my sister-in-law- I don't know what she thinks other than being anti-Democrat. Their daughter is a loyal Democrat - very liberal! I just can't figure out what happened to my sibling.

I have one republican brother that refuses to vote for Trump, although he won't vote for Hillary either. The other brother has made a complete 180 degree turn from Republican to Democrat which seemed to concur with his level of education from undergrad to grad to PhD. Funny how that happens.
