(53,339 posts)The classic is Reagan citing 'Born in the USA' as a patriotic song.
Another WTF moment was when, at a Michele Bachmann rally, Mitt Romney was played onstage to CCR's 'Fortunate Son.'
In a way, I hope they keep doing it because it cracks me up.
there's Obama's use of Hold On! Im Comin' in 2008 or "True Colors" in 2012.
Usually the only thing that a complaint accomplishes is to make sure that campaign organizers are extra-careful to secure the relevant permissions for the next month or so after the complaint goes public.
As for the endorsement that a lot of singers/songwriters feel would be attributed to them ... Not so much. Even with "Born" I don't think most people thought Springsteen necessarily endorsed Reagan. But complaining certainly gets publicity, and pretty much all publicity is good publicity. (Well, maybe not if you're arrested for drunk driving or underage solicitiation.)

(5,417 posts)The stones and every major artist give companies like BMI the rights to liscense their music. So one just contacts BMI and pays the fee. Perhaps he never paid the fee, but nobody is acussing him of that.
